A very different question on which I suspect we broadly agree;)

I happened to be driving through Froghall at around 10.40 this morning, just as a steam loco was passing under the bridge, and two or three photters were on the bridge.

I only caught a brief glimpse of the top of the boiler and chimney so couldn't identify it. Does anyone know which loco it was?

    TIA.

If it was green it would have been the Polish TkH49, 2944 'Hotspur'.
If it was black it would have been either of their USATC S160s, 5197 or 6046. I believe that 6046 was in service last weekend so it could well have been that.

Thanks Matt. I only saw the front, mainly the smokebox and chimney which would be black on all of them, even on 2944, though as the green dome is quite close to the chimney on 2944, I'm sure I'd have spotted that.

I certainly didn't see any green, but with the brief glimpse I had, I'd say the chimney was not a stovepipe one, so most likely a USATC loco.

I was tempted to stop and run back but unfortunately was in a hurry.

Perhaps I misunderstand your comment but (and without commenting on this particular proposal) Nottingham's tram system has park and ride interchanges at the end of each line plus one further in (Wilkinson Street) where the depot is.

[edit] I guess I should add The Forest (except when it is Goose Fair).

    6046 was today loco.

The plan is that each loco will do 3x turns (Sat, Sun, Weds) in rotation. 6046 went first, 5197 is up next. 2944 though broke a spring during the crew refresher turns so is awaiting that to be replaced before entering the fold. Delivery date of a replacement spring is uncertain atm...

PWay were in at least three places today - one team were clearing the ballast from the top of sleepers in the loop at Ipstones, prior to tamping, while another team were continuing the siding work at Froghall. This week we had a telehandler for four hours to help move the sleepers and rails roughly into position. That speeded up the work considerably and we managed two panels of sleepers in place and one with the rails on. One of these needs to be cut to length on Sunday. Should have the whole siding completed in record time.

With trains running weekends and Wednesday (with great feedback from customers) our regular weekday PWay day has moved to Thursday. Still beavering away at the new Froghall siding with a good sized gang today and more achieved than previous days. Still a bit to go though .............

    Tripple track -
The fairly swift progress that was being made by PWay at Froghall slowed this week because at the end of the river bridge the plans have a turnout to give access to the second siding. Without having the long sleepers in place, or the turnout we have had to leave a gap the right length for this work. The 33 sleepers we placed last week in that place will have to be moved as well. The panel beyond the turnout now has rails on the sleepers.

Full team out today, recovering long sleepers from Leekbrook and loading onto the Hiab for the siding work at Froghall. Replacing them of course with normal ones.

    Ditto.

I don't believe for a moment this kit will have been stolen for use, and it's so frustrating that the scrap value will be a fraction of the true worth.

I hope the thieves find they can't pass it on since all scrap merchants are supposed now to check their customers and only pay into bank accounts, I believe.

If so, is there a chance they might just dump it?

I wouldn't put much money on it, alas. One of the most depressing pats of the report was this: "Following a lack of response to previous calls through official channels, ... we have felt it futile in reporting this case as the chances of a positive outcome have shown to be minimal or non existent."

Can anyone recall an instance of a metal theft from a heritage railway where the stolen items were recovered?

No unfortunately I had read that and it doesn’t look good, was kind of hoping they went to a scrap merchants who realised what it was they had and got caught that way.

Extract from the CVR’s statement; “It is a sad indictment of todays society that even when the Police do know the culprits they are advised against taking action on various other grounds”

Given the planned nature of the operation, equipment required to break in and the vehicles needed to remove the items I suspect this refers to a certain mobile community, that the Police are strangely reluctant to tackle. In the interests of politically correct balance I should say that I might be entirely wrong...
