West Somerset Railway General Discussion

Discussie in 'Heritage Railways & Centres in the UK' gestart door gwr4090, 15 nov 2007.

Quantock Brewery Taproom makes BL a destination for a pleasing number of WSR ticket holders. Most trains arriving at BL produce at least some thirsty customers, then a mini-exodus ten minutes before departure time. Saturday is often the busiest day, our taproom being closed Sundays.

Arrival of last train of the day at BL usually brings more happy customers, sometimes followed by volunteers that have just finished their day's work. You don't get that in transit camps!

Whereas, of course, the IOW is the perfect length, with the perfect combination of stations and has been since the day it opened?

You are getting sadly bitter. I was there today. Two trains were in service and carrying plenty of people. Likewise the Ffestiniog, judging from their webcam, is carrying good loads with three sets and there will be others. @Monkey Magic has described admirably how the F.R.(which I don't belong to) matches the business on offer.

So, It Might As Well Rain Until September as Carole King famously sang.
Three AGMs. WRSA, WSSRT and WSR PLC. What chance of solving some of the many issues that need to be resolved?
Doubt even BetFred or any other bookie would be prepared to open a book on that one.
At least revoke the eviction of the S&DRT. Might give some of us hope that that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and the WSR has a future as a preserved railway.

I really liked someone else's suggestion of the railway running from Minehead to Williton with the S&DRT relocated there as a destination attraction and everything else handed back to Network Rail should GWR want to develop a service from Taunton north westwards.

Not bitter at all. Just sorry that you never seem to understand that there can be more than one successful model. 'Paul's universal elixia' doesnt cure all ills.

So back to the question (which had nothing to do with Covid). Assume normal conditions, which include the vast majority of visitors arriving at Bishops Lydeard by car. How would YOU shorten the WSR?

If the meeting I was at today was anything to go by, the eviction of the S&DRT is the cause of great ill feeling towards the whole WSR family

    You are still shouting.

Run it as a tourist attraction from Minehead without playing Lot's wife to a mainline connection. Pity there is no loop at Watchet but it just does not need to be 22 miles long.

That doesn’t surprise me John. Hopefully the upcoming AGMs can sort it out. As I’ve said before, letting the ‘potential’ (note my emphasis on the word potential ) eviction end up in court would be a financial disaster for both organisations. Whatever the outcome, the only people rubbing their hands with glee would be the lawyers.

Dont be silly. As has been explained, capitalising a single word is EMPHASIS, not shouting.

So, at last we have a proposal.

Under that suggestion, where would the car park be to attract folk coming from the M5 / Taunton?

It seems to me that the WSR has two different 'markets'

The BL to Minehead traffic, out in the morning back in the evening & the passengers travelling along the coast between Minehead & Watchet and the intermediate stations

It's not shouting. THIS IS SHOUTING. Whereas THIS is merely a way of applying emphasis to a word. There are of course others, but especially if you happen to be posting on a mobile phone where formatting for bold or italic is a bit of a faff, capitals is probably easiest, although I still tend to go for *this* if all else fails rather than capitals, but that's just me.
    Hope that helps... :)

‘Various’ is rather vague. To have any credibility it needs to be in percentage terms. Is it 100%,50%,10% or what?
