My guess is that the three hours at Carlisle is simply to give time to service the loco and, importantly, load more coal. I think that you can run the CME from Carnforth around the circuit to Preston and back to Carnforth on a tender full. But doing the same from Crewe and back via the coast is another matter.

I would be surprised if they are not using a system as pictured here at Upperby. Guy on the tender top pulls the draw string and just over one ton per bag drops into the tender. Takes minutes.

Cast your mind back 12 months and LSL renegotiated the timings last minute to give a far more reasonable return time to Crewe. We had just over an hour in Carlisle (rather than nearly 4) during which 70000 was turned and serviced. It also meant a return to Crewe nearer 8pm rather than 11pm.

An hours turn round at Carlisle does need the full cooperation of the local control.

Hey up Austin great shot, gone all high tech I see... Am I right in thinking that the sound is not from the drone?

Thanks Ralph, that's right, I had set the mic. up on the opposite side of the river to record the sound. The drone was far enough away to avoid recording the sound of the propellers which are like angry bees!

It's remarkable how still the drone was, but I guess there is some image stabilisation in use as well and were where you standing.

No image stabilisation Ralph, I just allowed the drone to hover and the gimbal keeps it steady.
