they could always name those new roads, Blue anchor way, , Washford ave , Willinton Way etc, and The Railway cull de sac. , the last, somewhat fitting,

I cant help but wonder how many of the volunteer loco staff might end up starting afresh by following 88 to her new home.

Personally if I was the S&DRT I would leave nothing behind except disturbed ground and ashes. If there was nowhere to put the sidings and buildings then it would be offered to other railways and if not sold then the metal would sold for scrap, wood burnt on site and other material disposed of as appropriate. Don't even leave the concrete of the shed floor usable.

Better to leave fairly, with heads held high, than sink to the level of opponents.

That would rather depend on whether the MHR actually needs any more paid workshop staff - at least I'm assuming you mean paid staff. Extra volunteers at the MHR will always be welcome, but I suspect they would need to be prepared to work on anything.

That would be leaving fairly. To leave track and buildings for use without payment to the SDRT would be a kick in the teeth to the people who's money and effort will be required to set up elsewhere. To blazes with turning the other cheek.

On the GWSR loco owning groups tend to have their own volunteers, a bit like support crews. Of course they also have to be GWSR volunteers as well and often help each other out, but their primary focus is their loco. I know the MHR has some railway owned locos and others that whilst privately owned, aren't owned by a group so it's a little different, but isn't there an element of that type of working for the S15?

As far as operating locos are concerned, the paid staff maintain the locos with help from volunteers. For locos being rebuilt/refurbished etc, specific groups tend to concentrate on "their" locos but paid staff and volunteers may well carry out some work on those locos as well, particularly the NRM and MHRPS locos.

Edit - that's the steam locos - diesels are a bit different

I don't suggest for a moment leaving property behind; it's the suggestion of scorched earth I counsel against as it will sow dragons teeth.

As I understand it everything - including the concrete bases - is the property of the SDRT. Breaking up the concrete bases is perhaps going a bit far especially as the concrete might have to be broken out for any new use.... Still, it could be worse - at least there was no suggestion of sowing the ground with salt

I think, given the circumstances, many people would be pleased if the Trust removed - either re-sited or sold - their track and structures.
Whatever they decide I also think many would donate towards removal costs, some, I read, have already done so and joined the Group. The donations to the Trust may well be either money from those who do not support the WSR, for varying reasons, or money which usually would have gone to the WSR but would be allocated to the Trust in their hour of need.

Despite 35B's comments (which I always carefully read), the above post is exactly as per the terms of which ever lease for Washford you might consider.

Why would you not sell the track work in Washford for scrap when the WSR PLC state that they will not pay for SDRT loco '88's' overhaul?

The cost of this is probably going to be some £200,000, which the SDRT are now going to have to pay for.

(Reference the provision for same in the previous WSR PLC published accounts, that was omitted in the last extended set of accounts altogether!)

On that point, I believe @RailWest has mentioned before that the track is more than just track, but is an historical part of the collection in and off itself because of where it came from. I suspect pointwork even of only siding quality would still be sought after enough somewhere that it wouldn't be scrapped, such is the going price for that sort of equipment.

    Hi Alex,

I don't think that this sort of consideration is upper most in the SDRT board, currently.

    Cheers,

The points will be worth considerably more as points than as scrap. I expect the SDRT will need every penny they can get their hands on, if they have to move. If they have to move, I'll have to have a convo with the wife to see what's the largest possible donation we can make.

AIUI some of the track came from Radstock yard, specifically a three way point.
It'd be a shame if the scrap man got it.

Although if it were left behind, I doubt the WSR would rate it's historical interest.
