How bad are the midges at present? I'm coming to Fort Bill on Thursday for Friday afternoon's train, so do I need a couple of cans of repellent or gallons of the stuff?

Thanks, Henry and James. We will do our best to be prepared! Really looking forward to this trip - it's been on our "to do" list for years.

Henry, I don’t know if you were on the charter in 2002 when the September weather was exceptionally mild and one of our number decided it was a good idea to wear shorts. The midges on Rannoch Moor must have thought all their Christmases had come at once. Some NR track workers gave him some anti insect cream and after rubbing it he said it made no difference. They replied; ‘ it didn’t work for us either, that’s why we gave it to you’. We often still laugh about it now

I missed that year John but shorts and the Highlands seem like a recipe for disaster.

I saw a report the other day that said that there was evidence wearing checked clothing deterred insects as the check pattern confused their vision causing them difficulty in judging distance making them veer away. The study was a follow up to anecdotal reports where horses with check blankets were less prone to insect bites than those with plain blankets.

Impressive but I reckon this would cure the problem once and for all. :)

Well, the wee swine were busy in Mallaig this afternoon - thank goodness for Deet . Anyway, we had a great day out - West Coast have made the new way of operating very easy. Thanks to all concerned. Both the K1 (on the morning trip) and 45212 (our locomotive on the afternoon run) looked and sounded good; the coaches too were well turned out. The modifications made inside have been well done as well - the interiors really look the part.

Loadings on both trains seemed pretty good too - lots of happy folk on board.

Good to hear, I think WC took a big financial gamble in running this year but it looks as if it’s paid off.

Afternoon train running now advertised as running until the 27th September, 7 days a week.

Does this mean the K1 may see an additional week or two on the roster?
