An interesting one, something that other locomotive owners should be aware of and not be complacent, so put the full examination of the lubricators on the "must be done" list. Very few people will have suspected that this area of the lubricator would present such a problem but keys and keyways are not trouble free. I suppose that it is all a part of the learning process. That being said someone should have seriously questioned the amount of free play but there might not have been quite so much at the time of the Ebor incident but it could well have been a factor.

The Trust should be congratulated for the Winter maintenance carried out. As is usual a credit to the organisation and of value to all who work long and hard to keep these machines working whether they ancient or fairly new.

When was that info published? Had anything been said previously about reduced lubrication to a cylinder?

Cylinder oil is distributed from the cylinder oil pump to the atomisers and thence to the valves and often the cylinders themselves. It may also be distributed to valve spindle guides without the need for atomisation. So that pump most certainly fed the valves.

Not sure why we’re raking over all this again. Boredom maybe? This was all fully dissected at the time iirc. The cylinder oil lubricator, which feeds superheater oil to all surfaces in contact with superheated steam eg valves and pistons, had a single pawl drive. Post-Ebor this was modified to three pawls as per an A4. So built in redundancy and less chance of not engaging at higher speeds.

Interesting update's Mr Langer, I hope everyone who helped with the maintenance got the credit that they deserved, especially those staying away from home. A lot of work taking place, alongside a lot of other groups no doubt at this time of year and with what's currently going on.

I hope the trust appreciates the teams efforts and prioritising the important jobs in getting Tornado ready to get back out and play again.

Tornado is currently at Carnforth, where she will be repainted once again into BR Express Passenger Green until the end of her current ticket in 2022. https://www.a1steam.com/2020/08/18/support-our-30th-anniversary-appeals/

As part of a photoshoot for the front cover of Steam Railway to mark the A1 Trust's 30th Anniversary, the loco was also fitted with a number plate from sister loco 60145 Saint Mungo and the front end painted and weathered to appear as the loco at the end of her service life.

According to Steve Davies in Steam Railway, Tornado could also be available to be weathered if a railway requests it and the reason behind the repaint is because the Apple Green is starting to look a bit tired and rather than correcting some of the more complex parts of the livery, it was felt easier to do a full repaint.

Will be nice to see Tornado in her Brunswick coat, having only seen her in apple green and blue.

Must admit it does look nice on the cover of this months Steam Railway. I’m all for ringing the changes every now and again though.

Hopefully it will emerge in the same shade as the other green Carnforth inhabitants. The previous version of BR green on 60163 looked oddly lifeless I thought.

    Good news indeed.

    BR green just looks 'right'.

Almost anything would look better than that insipid apple green, which 60163 would never have carried if it had been built as a continuation of the A1 class after 60162 was outshopped in December 1949 in the then current Express Blue (which I thought looked marvellous on 60163).

Given she wasn't finished until 2008, should that mean she should be wearing a livery more akin to then - Virgin Trains? DB? ;)

Pefer to have Tornado in BR blue but in Brunswick Green is much better, its stands out more than Apple Green, even though I like the loco in Apple Green.

Any of its past guises are fine for me. I'm just grateful we can see an A1 in steam in 2020!

Admittedly I prefer the Apple Green livery (and would personally prefer a fictitious LNER Apple Green livery as once done with vinyls before the first repaint into BR Green), but I'll take an A1 in steam in any livery any day!
