    Well somebody thinks that Tornado needs to 'reinvent' itself every so often and I guess painting it with something off the appropriate colour chart is a way of doing it. At least that way the loco satisfies everyone's colour preference at some point.

    There was a hint of irony in my comment. For instance in his time at Tyseley I don't think there was much chance that Bob Meanley would allow anyone to paint 5043/7029 - you name it - in any colour other than the proper one.

    Just out of interest was that a region thing? Blue Peter’s had red, black and light blue plates, 35028 has red and black plates. I’ve always thought the light blue was a Scottish thing?

    Any colour that's not red! Red looks magnificent on an ex-LMS or ex-LT engine, not so much on (almost) anything else...

    Taw Valley's red makeover was horrific, but 2253 Omaha wears the red well.

    I agree about the nameplate. 60114 'W P Allen' (36A Doncaster) had the pale blue nameplate when I saw it in 1964. Eye-catching at the time, maybe the only pale blue plate I saw and I remember it with fondness, but it clashed with the loco.

    The pale blue on that huge Tornado nameplate detracts. Black, as you say, or red would have been better.
