Yep definatley in the works at the moment for preperation for the two trips. We had a working day on her today where we tackled the brass work, was just starting to look a bit tarnished after being on display. The marker lights have been brushed down, emeried and polished to give a better appearance than the dull cast look of before. Hopefully keeping on top of the job for now and help maintain the immaculate look.

As a point of interest the rimless chimney is going on now, early this next week I would imagine. It may not look the best but its something different and for all you 'rivet counters' its accurate to the livery its in. My advice is go and see her while shes this clean as it wont last forever.

Rimless chimney on and all smokebox gubbins present & correct.
Whatever they were doing there was some very annoying desoutering going on today, all day! Even cocooned in the search engine couldnt get away from the noise. Couldnt even get a decent shot of her, half in, half out the workshop. Paint finish fantastic though.
LED cluster oil lamps look weird, 1st time I've seen such a thing.

Yes, saw Tornado for the first time today. It looked a bit odd half in and half out of the great hall / workshop area but still very impressive for all that. The smoke box number plate and headboard gives an untidy look though. Work being carried out in the cab area but not obvious what's happening.

By smokebox gubbins do you mean that the numberplate has been moved above the handrail.

No, just bits associated with chimney, petticote, mixing pipes etc implying that chimney was not just in position.
Numberplate was not on the door on Thursday. The headboard was on the light engine lamp holder.

One of the magazines had an interesting comparision of the two LNER "green" pacifics..

60163 has cost £3.8million (even though some of this money is infrastructure / excess / spread)... and
4472 has cost £2.2million to buy, and £750k so far with maybe £500k still to go...

making the cost of both... well quite similar.

There will surely come a point, when major boiler repairs are required, that purchasing a new boiler becomes the more cost effective and sensible solution?

Which is what should have happened with 850, but of course the ERPS would not have got the Lottery funding.

Agreed without a doubt, had it been me it would of had a new boiler made. The cost thats being spent to get the A3 one up to standard is unbelievable!

If only the same could be said for Blue Peter, imagine that, A1, A2, A3 and A4 all on the main line!

Is it not considered bad luck for a locomotive to run in anger before being properly named? Or is that just silly? (I realise she already ran on the GCR)

So Slightly off topic, but boilers...

If 4472's is costing so much, whats the long term plan for the other Boiler ? - Potential use on the B17 project ? Maybe it could be the base of an original A1 rebuild project ?

How come 60163 didnt use the spare LNER A4 tender ?, and although it went to Bittern, have anyone any plans to actually use it ?

Sorry i'm mincing round the Tornado topic but it's psuedo relevent.

    Hi

The boiler that 4472 ran with during its last ticket was an A4 boiler, the NRM wanted it to return with the spare A3 boiler which is now being repaired at considerable cost.
