We're finally back in Solihull after a mammoth day.

Definitely got to hand it to Saphos. Apart from the locked station at Solihull this morning, everything went smoothly and we kept mostly to time all day.

Food was excellent, service was attentive and thorough, scenery was fantastic and the run was as good as could be expected with a class 5 on the front and diesel on the back.

Covid measures were sensible but not intrusive (I'm not getting into the mask debate) and we felt safe all the time we were on board.

Just looking forward to Saphos getting more Mk1s operational as we sadly can't afford Premium Dining that often. This was a special treat as we hadn't had any real steam outings since Feb.

Does anybody know the reason for routing the train through Platform 4 at Lancastr Castle rather than go though on the Up Fast.
The same thing happened two weeks ago with 46100 in charge.
The train ran straight through on the platform line without stopping

You’re right, the crew at Preston saying the limit is still 60mph.

Haha! Cheers Henry, one of those days! I thought the cloud was going to spoil it all here but got a lucky gap above the loco. A couple of minutes later and there was a lovely red glow in the sky.

A large amount of deceit and deception in this video! Following the BBC weather forecast of 'a gentle breeze from the north' I thought the gentle breeze would carry the sound quite nicely to this spot above Greenholme. Unfortunately the gentle breeze turned out to be a howling gale which meant that even with a blimp for the microphone the soundtrack was ruined. So the sound in this clip is from a recording made at Bay Horse in 2013 of sister loco 44932. The sound was repeated through the video and volume adjusted as the train went into the distance. Not perfect by any means but the view was good!

Congratulations to the photographers who contrived to have the diesel at the back hidden in one way or another, especially the eponymous black5 with the smoke/steam in post #61 (even if that one did involve some luck).

Lovely. Needs must and a good chance to be creative, my sound up Shap similarly was a mix sound from the coast in the distance and then looped sound of the five close up, as could barely hear her in the wind until she crossed the road leading to Shap Wells hotel.

Thought you must’ve done something along those lines as I was opposite you at Shap Wells and even my Rode blimp struggled with the savage wind . Very creative mind .
