Why didn't they just send down the Scot or BIL ? Then surely only one diesel would of been needed. I guess the Black Five was cheaper to hire than any of West Coast's fleet !

  2. Black 5 + 10 + 47802 on rear. 5 working really hard through Norton Fitzwarren with quiet box on back. Suspect it was about to shove though.

It's a Catch 22 problem at present. With social distancing on the train your only hope for revenue is to have as long a train as possible so you can accommodate as many people in a 'Covid safe' way as possible. I presume that the trip had enough appeal to fill 9 coaches. Add a support coach and you are overloaded for a Class 5. So the diesel has to go to assist west of Taunton and possibly also help with logistics.

Let's hope that the train is as full as it can be to help the RTC. If it's not then there is a lot of waste running along the track - i.e. more coaches than you need and a diesel you could have done without.

Perhaps, try for a full 8 coach train and price accordingly. It's impossible to predict in these weird times how much people would pay. Cancel the train if it doesn't work out. (For this Royal Duchy, of course, the main problem was the late loco substitution.).

If the plan was always for a total load of 10 coaches, wouldn't that have been too much even for a Class 7 beyond Newton Abbot?

The limit for a class 5 loco is 8 coaches between Newton Abbot and Plymouth. Class 7 and 8 locos are allowed 9. (Both reduced by 2 coaches between 15th September and 31st December).
From the Network Rail Guidelines for steam train lengths and loads – issued 23/05/16.

Hit the nail firmly on the head. This is all down to the PRCLT's failure to provide 6233.

Think you need to get your facts correct first before making a statement like that .

Looking at the RTT schedule and the length of time stationary Anthony, I’m guessing that the tour is taking on water at Exeter

Has the Black 5 now been taken down to Par? The times on RTT only allow 1 minute at Plymouth now (the estimated passing's times that is)

No. Have a look at 5Z82 and 0Z84 at Plymouth.

The times for the return will be the WTT column.

What do you mean? We were all told 6233 was the rostered locomotive and would have been able to take 10 over the banks. Were we "misinformed"?

By full train I assume you mean at COVID reduced loadings. So this may work out for next year (as I assume we will still be in the same position as now), but what was your proposal for this tour where bookings would have been made pre COVID?. Ring them up and ask for an extra £50 each?
