I suspect asbestos would make any potential future use that involved doing any work to them unfeasible.

The question is one of opportunity cost: there are perhaps two dozen carriages of greater interest and match to the railway’s stated aims awaiting restoration: doing anything along the lines suggested would inevitably at the expense of one or more of those.

I suspect we probably have to get used to the fact that some carriages across many railways will end up being scrapped for want of resources, and sleepers would be one group on the risk list. The railway has been trying to find a new home for the Maunsell TPO for about twenty years, but it is one thing saying “it’s an interesting vehicle historically”, quite another to find a group that has both the desire and capability to restore such vehicles that have no revenue earning potential.

Has there been any contact with the TPO group at the Nene Valley? (Tom I appreciate you might not know, but I would have thought this would be right up their street)

Could this vehicle not form part of some kind of museum exhibit, like for example the TPO in the NRM, one at Highley on the SVR etc. What sort of condition is it in ?

All very true, and you are quite right that for any museum or heritage collection, deciding what to not to keep is in many ways more important than deciding what to keep. I also hadn't realised that asbestos might be a problem. All the same, we have already seen so many losses of historic coaches in recent decades that any further loss is regrettable.

Still, hope is not lost yet - let's hope some other railway might yet have a use for them, and the resources to take them on.

No. 65 is up for sale? Interesting, though she was originally a saddle tank I've always thought she was one of the prettiest tank industrials I'd ever sern.

And if some locations/railways don't survive there may be more for sale/disposal.

I am not sure if it is necessarily a financial problem, so much as people rationalising the stock they have. How many lines have stock that, realistically, they will never have the time or resources to restore?

A lot of rolling stock and locos on preserved railways is privately owned and comes up for sale because of the owners personal situation. You get an owner who bought something 20 years ago when they were in their 50s, now they are in their 70s and decide it is too much hassle for them. Sometimes their heath gets a lot worse. Often unless you work at the railway you wont even know it has been sold and it gets passed from one member to another without being generally advertised. Sometimes owners buy 3 projects but then only have time/money to work on one of them.

With groups, it maybe that key people drop out and the group decides to call it a day and pass stuff on. With locos it can be when it needs its next overhaul that forces a decision.
