When I worked in ferries I think we allowed 12 passengers per ton as part of the cargo.

    It's a lot simpler in metric. I weigh about 80kg. There's 1000 kg's to the tonne. So bodies per tonne = 1000/80 = 12.5.

I guess the 0.5 could be messy though :-( all a bit Damien Hirst.

Conversley, for the "500-odd bodies" you'd be looking at 500 x 80 / 1000 = 40 tonnes - you can do it in your head.

I'd do 5X8=40000 (add 3 0's back) then divide by a 1000=40 why has this turned into a maths test!? Oh and spelling test......

The itinerary for Sunday 1 Feb has been changed. It is now Doncaster-Durham-Doncaster, due potential crowd control issues at Newcastle. Revised times at www.uksteam.info shortly.

Sense has prevailed, everybody can now have a great day out in Durham Instead.

And extra mileage is an added bonus as well.

The safety of passengers should be the operators prime motive when running any excursion.

The A1 trust should be applauded in contacting the people who know what is happening on the ground on days like this (BTP and network rail), and ammending their itinery as such. It shows again that they are doing it right.

Nobody, least of all myself, wants the itinery have to be changed at shortish notice, however as i mentioned earlier, it unfortunate it clashes with the football derby, and safety of passengers has to be the operators prime concern.

    Roll on next week.

I am amazed that apparently the fact that there are going to be crowds at Newcastle station for a derby match has caught people by surprise. I am pretty sure the date and time of the game has been known for longer than the dates for the first tours have been.

Perhaps known to those who are interested in football.

And ISTR someone saying it was originally booked for the following day, and that the match date had been changed to clash with the tour?

The second run of The Peppercorn Pioneer on Sunday 1st February 2009 will now start from Doncaster with 60163 Tornado, picking up at York and running through to Durham. This change of itinery is because the Trust has been advised by Network Rail and the British Transport Police that due to significant concerns regarding crowd control at Newcastle Central station on Sunday 1st February, Tornado's second train cannot operate through to Newcastle. The return journey will be hauled by Tornado from Durham to York with a modern diesel locomotive returning the train from York to Doncaster. It should be noted that Tornado will not be at Newcastle Central station at any point on Sunday 1st February.

However, the Trust is delighted to announce that a limited number of tickets are now available to the general public on this second train, their first opportunity to travel behind Tornado on the main line. They are priced at £69.00 for Standard Class and £95.00 First Class and are available through the Trust’s booking agent Steam Dreams on 01483 209886.

Although we are disappointed not to be running through to Newcastle on Sunday 1st February, we are delighted to be able to start the train in Doncaster. This is very appropriate as the Peppercorn class A1s were designed at the Doncaster Works of the London & North Eastern Railway, 26 of the original A1s were built there in 1948/49 and the Trust was based in Doncaster for a number of years before finding a permanent home in Darlington.

The second run of The Peppercorn Pioneer on Sunday 1st February 2009 and Tornado will follow the timings below from Doncaster to Durham and return:

    Doncaster - Platform 1 – 11:56hrs
    York - Platform 11 – 12:27-12:48hrs
    Durham - Platform 2 – 14:10-14:15hrs

    Durham - Platform 1 – 17:50-53hrs
    York 18:57-19:28hrs
    Doncaster – 19:52hrs

For details of how to help or where to travel behind Tornado telephone 01325 4 60163, visit www.a1steam.com or email enquiries@a1steam.com.

If the match was changed for Sky reasons, that still would have been done a while ago. I know I had realised the the potential clash at least a month ago. Maybe the Trust can't be blamed for not being football fans, but whoever at the BTP/NR should have seen this coming a mile away, there can be no excuse on their part for this having been changed barely over a week before hand.

I started a thread nearly 3 weeks ago about this and emailed the operators of the tour making them aware of the date clash, and concerns over the safety for passengers.

I got a email by return, "thanking for the heads up".

Being local, i knew that being in Newcastle and that time is like being in Helmand provence, Afghanistan, and it had disaster (PR and otherwise) written all over it.

Well done to them for changing the itinery, but you are wrong to say it has just been picked up on, it has'nt.
