Midland Railway Trust gets emergency grant to reopen https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-54130985

Midland Railway Trust, which runs working stations Butterley and Hammersmith and Swanwick Junction in Derbyshire, will receive £104,400 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Some more info from the NHLF, includes a name check for Strathspey Railway, £45,500.

10% of the £49.8m awarded went to “industrial, maritime and transport heritage sites”.

Interestingly, there was apparently 77% “success rate across the total applications received”. I assume that must be because there was a degree of self-selection in who applied.

    Strathspey I'd seen

    Bala Lake Railway £40,000
    Bluebell Railway £250,000
    Foxfield Railway £81,500
    Gwili Railway £22,400
Isle of Wight Steam Railway £39,300
Keighley & Worth Valley Railway £50,000
    Llangollen Railway £161,000
    Midland Railway Trust £194,400
    Mid Hants Railway £250,000
    Nene Valley Railway £47,000
    North Norfolk Railway £46,500
    Severn Valley Railway £250,000
    South Devon Railway £124,800
    Strathspey Railway £45,500
    Talyllyn Railway £45,700
Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway £25,000
    Wensleydale Railway £50,000

£1.723m from my reckoning, around a third of the £5m to “industrial, maritime and transport heritage sites”.

Among railways I'm only aware of Great Central's being refused, which would give a 94% success rate.

Some homework for you Patrick (and congratulations to the Severn Valley!) @D1039

    https://www.gov.uk/government/news/...ved-by-103-million-investment-from-government

From a really quick scan I saw the All Valley; Bluebell; Middleton; Northampton and Lamport; Plym Valley; North Norfolk; SVR; Swanage; WSR on the list but I am sure there are others. (Also interesting to see non-railway railway organisations, if that makes sense, including the A1 Trust and Dinmore Manor).

If only this had been organised earlier, some of the donations from individuals might have been applied to other deserving causes instead. Anyway better late than never.

445 heritage places saved, some from possible oblivion. There are priorities it seems to be observed with the grants no side drawers! ;);)

Additional: the list is headed 'under £1m' so there may be more to come?

And: "Grants of up to £1 million will deliver a lifeline for the heritage sector in England with further support to follow and larger grants for capital projects awarded through the Heritage Stimulus Fund"

Presumably means there are some organisation with bigger awards, but amongst heritage railways, who might be of that scale? NYMR and Festiniog / WHR are the two I can think of that are simultaneously very large and not on the list above as having already received an award.

(Hasten to add: pure speculation from me; I have no inside knowledge).

I had the same thought, the Arts Council explainer said grants could range up to £3m. Also, I wondered if some organisations could get capital grants too.

    I've no idea either!

    Patrick

EDIT: Mrs H tells me she's read that the £1m-£3m grants will be announced in the next few days.
