Especially if 34007 is done with British Railways on the tender and 34007 in sunshine numbering, whilst 34105 is presented in early BR livery, or one of the experimental liveries, what stile tender does 34007 have now, or is due to have, if its the later 5000 gallon type, as fitted late in the lives of these engines, then possibly a tender swop might be needed, and then 34105 will have to be done in the final livery with cut down, or later style tender.

Livery debate! Bulleid tender debate! This thread could run and run!

Popped up to Alresford station today and seemed nicely busy with the "Countryman" hauled by 30925 and 506 and 76017 on the service trains. Plenty of carriage door cleaning, hand gelling and mask wearing in evidence too. We seem to be a generally well-behaved lot here in Hampshire

The full extent will only be known when the loco is stripped down, and assessed, One thing I would be very interested in though is how much difference it has made to running the loco on RO water for most of her ticket has made to the state of the boiler, RO water has all the impurities removed, and does not attack the steal quite so harshly as non treated water, I saw a set of tubes being pulled out of an KESR Terrier after it had done 7 years on treated water, and they were like new .

Perhaps certain was the wrong choice of word. However I do like to be optimistic.

It is great to see the locos fundraising page on Virgin money giving showing £150,020. There is obviously a desire to get the loco running again amongst its supporters, although it is noted that the amount is only 37 per cent of the estimated target and there is still a way to go.
I have donated small amounts in the past to MHR projects and will give again in the future. Anyway I await an official announcement in the future once the i's have hopefully been dotted and the T's crossed.

Nice photo Steve. I can’t remember anyone else doing that shot before from the other side of the line. Looks great with the Pway hut in the photo.

Didn't 34007 last run with a tender from one of the other Bulleid's on the MHR, I have a vague feeling 34007 had been using 35005 tender ?

As I remember it. 34007 ran with the tender from 35005 but that tender was swapped with the one previously used by 35027 and 34046, in the final few years of her ticket (that tender now has a new tank and will be used on 35005).

The frames, tank and possibly the wheelsets for 34007 were on a wagon in the headshunt at Alton, at least they were the last time up was at the MHR.

Yep 34007 did run with CP's tender. Before that it ran with the tender from 34039 on loan. 34007 now has a nearly complete new build tender sitting at Ropley.

For a while the chassis supported the new tender tank for 35005, however the chassis is now fitted with the tank that arrived from the Bodmin and Wenford Railway.
Incidentally the engineer in charge of restoring 34007 at Bodmin states that the ladders have the wrong number of rungs, but i guess this is just rivet counter stuff.

Pictured below 34007 tender on the left. 34105 tender on the right.

Blimey Martin, you don't want much, do you? :D
If 499 runs by the end of 2020 I'll be 70. While we do have a few younger guys coming along, I think a rest may well be the first option!

Thanks for that, so both engines will have the earlier style of tender then,

Yes, however 34105 has a larger MN tender with the longer chassis.

Just a two man crew atop the hill yesterday....... well, more like up the Meon siding for a good chunk of it!!

The day though, did start off at Medstead, with the London end botton plank on the two plank having a 2nd undercoat & then it was off to the Meon......

Work started on the country end Sealion, after watching the Std 4 thunder past!:)

Underneath one o these beasts is not the best enviroment without an inspection pit......... but all eight travel channels were degunked, no mean feat, whilst on your back & using a flathead screwdriver to chisel off the aforementioned, welded on gunk!! After that, attention moved on to the gubbins under country end & repeating the process of chiselling off welded on gunk & boy was there a lot of it! :(

After that, it was a case of tracing the linkage to work out where & how it traverses the length of the vehicle........... followed by more gunk removal & then soaking every point we could find with copious amounts of sump oil........ :Nailbiting:

Whilst that was soaking in, it seemed rude not to watch 30925 saunter past on its way to Medstead! ;)

Back to the Sealion to see if the oil had done any good.......... 1st off was to try the handbrake wheel by hand, and yes there were signs of movement in more & more of the linkage, but still a lot of resisitance, so....... time to bring in the wrecking bar to try & force the wheel round......... it forced bits that didn't want to move to do so & then each brake block was given a whack with the bar & now all 8 hang loose & free!!!!!! :D

After a good 8 man hours on the Sealion, it was time to head back to base, where the plank was given its 1st topcoat of gloss.

So, the next visit to the Meon, will find the more stubborn of the two Sealions attacked, now that we know what we are looking for.......

The Std 4 & Schools passing us.

Just as an aside, can I mention that the various p.way huts together with their names is quite a distinctive feature of the line? The kind of attention to detail that has a practical benefit but also adds to the infrastructure and visual impact of the line.

Of course if you wanted to be REALLY experimental you can stick a tender from a black five behind it for some "1948 loco exchange" chic.
