I visited the SVR today, another good day out there.

    I would like to ask who owns 4566, 5764, 7714 and 46443?

Also, is it just me, or is 7714 seemed to be treated different to the rest of the fleet. Is there anything wrong with this Pannier?

These particular locos are owned by funds set up to save them in the first place & then assist with their upkeep. 5764 & 7714 are owned by the same fund.

7714 is very close to the end of her boiler ticket & is currently only used on light duties until expiry.

7714 was out of action for a long time if any body remembers with a crank axle problem.
when that was all fixed crews rated her above 5764 because of the lack of use on her.
There is the spare pannier boiler but no idea what the state of play its in.

The spare pannier boiler is being worked on in the Bridgnorth boiler shop. I surmise that there could be a quickie turnaround for 7714, by swapping the boiler, and given that it perhaps isn't in too bad a condition below. A quick "sole and heal" perhaps? I say this because presumably it was sorted out below the running plate when the new crank axle was fitted.

Photos taken in December show serious work on the spare boiler, with backhead and throatplate removed for renewal.

7714 had a long spell with a poorly crank axle, which is now repaired, so was very restricted for a long time, the boiler is now suffering from only having a light repair in the boiler crisis (8 years ago) and now is going wash out to wash out, how ever, when she is in fine form, she is a very good little loco.
6443 is owned by the Members of the railway, following her sale in the early 80's to fund the purcase of Leander.
4566 is owned by the Great Western Association.

Apart from the spare boiler, is there anything else left of the Pannier rescued from Barry for spares? Is it a case, like the 2 jintys at the MRC, that the frames have been put somewhere "just in case"?

7714 has always seemed to be noticably stronger than 5764 during its time on the Valey - I'd put this down to the 20 year restoration that it had, where the team did everything to perfection. That said, there is nothing wrong with 5764, it just that 7714 has that little bit more poke. As said above, the boiler is being nursed now, so steamings are limited when possible.

The frames of 3612 were cut - most other bits were saved.

Didn't the cylinder block end up on 7754 at Llangollen?

Yes, which was the final curtain call on the frames. 3612 was 'only' ever purchased as a source of spares, primarily for its wheels which went under 5764 in the late 70's. Her boiler now rests in 5764. Obviously this loco is a 'may have been a restoration case' seeing other 'spare' locos restored, I would have loved to have seen the later form of pannier on the SVR. However, decision was made before a long time ago...

Yes. 7754's original block was beyond repair, so a straight swap was done back in the 80's...

I'm open to correction but; isn't the motion bracket and some other odds and ends in the yard near where the Western lads hang out?

I've got a soft spot for panniers 3612 and 9629 (and indeed all later 8751 type locos as I think the cab just looks right). We know about the latter engine and where it's boiler went; however with 3612 I'm macabre enough to want to know if the frames were delivered to Llangollen complete or if the SVR did the honours and just torched the frames so that the cylinder block could be sent with the remains still attached? If this is the case, were they cut recently or way back in 1979?

They say a fool and his money are easily parted but if this fool had the funds I would pay for a new boiler (possibly an all welded one from Germany) for 9629 and set about trying to locate as many parts from 3612 as I could, or at least the discarded parts from the other engines who now sport ex-3612 parts. Of course, I'd be lucky to get a set of wheels as it sounds like what is left from the pool of discarded parts are knackered and don't amount to one pannier tank anyway, so basically we are talking about a 'restoration' in the same way that Taliesin was on the FR. It looks like I'd be giving Bill Parker a set of number plates and asking him to add a loco to the other side of them.

Methinks 3612 is another Euston Arch!

All that came to Llangollen was the cylinder block and the section of frames immediately either side of it, the rest was cut off before it left the SVR.

Agree an 8750 pannier would be brilliant on the SVR - I don't think one has run there in preservation days?

5764, 7714, 5775 7760 and 5786. They are all the panniers I can think of (except 1501 and 1369 although they were not of the same type and not part of the 57XX family) are the engines that have run on the SVR IIRC so you would be right, although I wouldn't be surprised if bits of 8750's had visited as part of the contract work - just never a complete working one!
