I believe the 03 referred to is an 05? So if you ran it in reverse, would that count as a 50?
    Don't worry, coat's already on! :D

Putting spent ballast and soil in the goosefield would be rather inconvenient as it would fill up the C&W and Loco works Yard. Their isn’t really anywhere to carry out that kind of activity.

sorry, Gary, i meant griffins sidings, wasn't the land there prown to get waterlogged ? would the O3 fit ryde tunnel, if it came to it that the only way to get materials to the pier head was to load them on flat wagons ?

ha ha yes, the only reason i mentioned Nuclear Fred, was because it is the only diesel at Havenstreet, that has previously been cut down to fit the loading gauge , did it ever work any of the engineers trains when the pier has needed work whilst in BR service?

No, the 03 referred to is an 03. D2059 - the IOWSR’s main engineering train and thunderbird loco.

But yes there is an 05 there too, which spends most of it’s time in Train Story and only sees occasional use.

It wouldn't be the first, or even the second, time a preserved steam loco has been hired for engineering work on the main line. It has happened twice in Northern Ireland.

It can get a little soft during periods of prolonged rain but rarely too waterlogged. The 03 will fit through Ryde tunnel but until fairly recently would not be able to even get to Ryde St Johns due to bridge clearances. Work has been carried out to increase the clearance at a number of bridges for the 484s.

03079 was successfully tested through Ryde tunnel with it's *original* cab, so Havenstreet's example should be fine - the bridges carrying Rink Road and Smallbrook Lane were an issue, but the relevant track was lowered this summer.

As for Nuclear Fred it wasn't cut down for the Island - it was one of those built with a lower cab, presumably why it was chosen?

Interesting. The use of the IOWSRs trains and or land /facilities is obviously being at least considered in some form.

Indeed the cut down myth has persisted for 50+ years. The other "preserved" 05s are from the later batch which was built with full height cabs.

how deep are the pockets of those paying for the work ? it will be done no doubt in the most cost effective way, and that must be to hire the IOWSR's 03, and some wagons, for the main reconstruction work, how much for photo op of the 03 propelling SR wagons, loaded with materials on Ryde pier? plus it will be extra income for the line, and they get a connection with Island line put in, that opens up in the future other possibilities should SWR decide to have an open day at Ryde when the new units start, a static exhibit in the works yard, the ashbury coach, and a loco ?

My tongue was very much in cheek Martin, hence the smiley, I do think there’s some mileage in the idea of using the shunter as a piece of plant via a connection though and the things that could be done because of it though.

    Isn't 35028 dual braked?

I am thinking it could come over with a selection of mk1, mk2s and of course a couple of all important RMBs to form the 'Paul Hitch Memorial Railtour' from Ryde to Shanklin via Wootton. Making a triumphant entry tender first into Ryde Pier at the head of its 10 coach train. The coaches will make a wonderful addition to the IOWSR.

I know loops might be a problem so maybe top and tail with a 9f.

    ;)

Not all that fanciful. I think that quite a few people would put their hand in their pocket to fund a day's photography of the delightful 03 with an engineer's train going up to Pier Head. And the arrival of the new units on Island Rail should be celebrated. Bureaucracy, elfansafety, etc permitting, of course.

I have just come across this photo https://static.wixstatic.com/media/...8a8_bda096ce17fe4bbea986ecd4ed80cbb5~mv2.webp on the Heritage Shunters trust website https://www.heritageshunterstrust.com/copy-of-photo-pot-pourri which nicely shows the two types of Class 05 together awaiting scrapping. Caption is "D2578 & D2559, await the call @ Thornton Jnct 14/09/67".

Don't you believe it. The addiction of gricers to W.I.B.N. ("wouldn't it be nice") is only equalled by one to S.E.W.P. ("someone else will pay")
