Living near Brum and having been to weymouth I can see the problems to cyclistd. In Brum tram rail is used. This is a single wide head flat bottom rail. The flangeway is created by by rolling a grove in the head. The groove is quite shallow. Whilst it might trap a racing tyre normal bikes should be ok

In weymouth the trck is normal rail and check rail. The gap is wide and deep, effectivly the height of a bullhead rail. Even a wide tyre may get trapped

Yes, safety and cars come before creativity and heritage.

Is this the same Andy Christie who volunteers at the SVR?

Just another rundown seaside town now, with no reason to visit.

My grandad used to drive a BSA 3-wheeler car. It looked a bit like the more famous Morgan, with 2 wheels at the front and 1 at the rear. Unlike the Morgan, it was front wheel drive, so there was almost no weight on the back wheel. If the back wheel got caught in Southampton's tram tracks, he had to stop, get out and lift the wheel out of the groove. It also had no reverse gear, but it was usually simple enough to lift the back and turn it around by hand!

As well as the donkey and Punch and Judy Show, the quay line was always a pantomime worth watching as car ownership grew -especially with careless parking.

Was that the one where you opened the bonnet and kick started the engine?

Ah yes, probably. One wheel at the front driven by the engine and two at the back.

My last trip to Weymouth to see the tram way was a few years ago. Even then it would have been nigh on impossible to use the track for such a ride.

This is the one you kickstart, a Bond Minicar, though later or higher specced ones had an electric start too

And their other party trick was the 180 degree lock which meant those with no reverse could turn in most spaces...
