I read somewhere that it went to Carnforth to have its dome removed prior to its journey to Norfolk.

Memories, a visit to Carnforth when Thundersley was there and it had a pair of driving wheels out, so guessing a bearing problem being fixed before the long move? I too was at Carnforth on that Saturday 3 August 1968, on the long bridge having been deigned access to the shed. Different at Lostock Hall later, it was an open house!

As I recall it there was a policeman on the footbridge guarding unauthorised access to the shed. However at some point he went off for a tea break and I joined the throng who grasped the opertunity and "did" the shed. After about 30-40 minutes he reappeared and went round asking those who did not have permission to leave. By this time I was happy to go and made my way back over the bridge just as 75019 came on shed at the end of its day, the last 10A loco to do so other than those connected with the specials the following day. I then followed this minor triumph by travelling on the 20.50 Preston to Blackpool behind 45212 before resumeing my journey from Sussex to Inverness that night. Not a bad result for a stop off done on spec as I really had no idea what steam activity I might find in the NW at that time.

The September 2020 issue of Steam Days has an article entitled "The National Collection - The Wilderness Years. ". This contains a full listing of all storage locations for National Collection locos from very early days until the opening of the NRM.

    Well worth a read.
