Surely the paint itself will act to help secure them in place? And will get refreshed periodically.

Thanks. Are you going to use an "MS&L" tender or the later Robinson type? I see that larger Robinson tenders at least had countersunk rivet heads. I can't find a suitable image of 567 but attached is the tender of 4-2-2 967 showing a fairly simple rivet pattern. Not sure a flush side would look that different but the. rivets might distract from any deformation in the plates.;)

    Hi Huochemi
On an earlier post# 126, there is a drawing of the tender design and explanation.
....and I do like the irony of a Victorian steam engine....... using CNC machining...for pseudo rivet heads....:Updated: But I am looking forward to seeing it steam over the MML - which may even be electrified by then?

Even if it does go main line, which seems not very likely, I think that should be somewhere other than a line that the GC was in such competition with. One of the surviving NR stretches of the GC would be good. As we all preserved or replicated express locos, being for ever confined to 25 mph would be a pity.

I think that he is referring to going over the new bridge that goes over the MML rather than taking it Mainline.

As gwalkeriow correctly states, I was referring to "going over" as per the new GC MML bridge (and getting the "Gap" project finished), and the on/off/on/off nature of the MML electrification.

Thanks. I wonder if the tender body in this drawing is based on the original 567 MS&L tender? It has rivets in places and at pitch centres that 967's doesn't (recognising that 567's tender may have been different).

Answering my own question, I see from the small scale image of 567 on the group's site that indeed the rivet pattern is different to that on 967's tender.

The image of the tender is a later design, having a vertical plate between the tank and the access handrail next to the cab. The model we are trying to emulate has 2 vertical 'handrails' giving a more open feel to the space.

As for going 'Main Line', a definite NO for several reasons:
1/ Being a Class 2 loco - it would not be able to pull sufficient carriages (=bums on seats) to make a profit or even cover the charges nor operate at a full line speed. Water and Coal capacity would also be an issue. On the Coal capacity issue, we may manufacture 'Greedy Plates' at a later date - but let us get 567 built first.
2/ The cost of paying a review body to certify that it is safe to operate on Network Rail is prohibitive. Virtually every nut and bolt has to have traceability and approval, and all my designs would need to be reviewed by a Professional Body and fully documented....Paperwork, Paperwork, more paperwork, meetings, more review meetings - ARGHHHH! - not at my time of life - I did that for a living - not going there again!

The loco is however being designed for operation at up to 65 MPH (which the GCR has dispensation for - but without passengers). In reality, it is only a tad slower than the Original 567.

Having said all the above, we are legally required to take reasonable and practical steps to ensure that the loco is fit for purpose and is able to be operated in a safe manner. Our Insurers will make this a requirement, as will all Heritage Railways upon which it could operate.
The axles are to be ultrasonic tested and documented - if it is to be allowed to run at 65 MPH on the GCR, and it make sense to do this as the wheelsets are built up, The Fabricated Crank Axle is being subjected to a full 3rd Party review and finite element analysis to ensure stress levels within the assembly are acceptable.

All perfectly reasonable -- but WIBN double heading with another small loco.

Well the 567 website has been updated (10th Oct).....but only with pictures of the wheel casting wooden pattern - and we know that these have already been cast. There must be an update due to the supporters soon. A new person, Tim Everett, has become the new editor.

The last newsletter I received came in late August. The accompanying email said that in 2021 the newsletter dates will revert to March / June/ September/ December. If there's not another newsletter between now and then (I should hope there would be) there's still the Supporters Day to come (we've yet to be told the precise date and format for that).

I also received that newsletter, but I think the group will need to be more frequent with it's updates - to increase it's visibility and hence fundraising capacity. Looking at the "successful" New Build groups, they all have more frequent updates (Monthly or better). Hopefully the new appointee will take this on board.

Really? Brighton Atlantic doesn't, NER 0-4-4 one is sporadic, Patriot one is not metronomic, the GE 2-4-2 doesn't manage monthly updates. I'd say all of them would be in a category of "successful" as they are all cutting metal and have substantial parts made as a minimum.

As I have said elsewhere, my biggest concern with tracking the Brighton Atlantic is seeing an entry that goes "oooh, yeah, we finished last month. Sorry for not telling anyone".

I would say that the previous chap set the bar very high, maybe it would be best to condense a few of the older ones, I think the drop in frequency (and the fact the newsletters don't seem to be coming up as they did (hiatus following the chap's death aside), as it's the decline in output that looks worse.
(yes, I do spend too much time clicking for updates).

When it comes to keeping people informed. . . There is one website dedicated to a new build (reconstruction) locomotive that was last updated a few months before that locomotive was officially completed, and now a couple of years later the front page of that website still says "is being constructed" despite the well known locomotive in question having been in use for a couple of years now. :( I'll leave you to guess which loco I am referring to.
I will just add that I have emailed the owning society a couple of times suggesting that the dedicated website either have a final 'completion' report added or be shutdown (which I hope it won't be as it still make an interesting read), but never received any response from them.

I may be the only person on here that doesn't mind that, but I don't, I just look forward to seeing it when possible.

We still have no news about this though, from the last newsletter...
"Forthcoming Events • Autumn Supporter Day: We will aim for an event end October, if a physical event cannot be held a live event via Zoom or similar would be set up. A special newsletter would also be sent to our supporters."

Well Covid and the ORR have put the brakes on the Tender Tank for a while with Ruddington operations shut for a while - but the drawings are completed, prices are in and it will be done sometime in the future when the wreck of the ROD Tender can be dragged screaming (wheels not turned for many years) into the workshops. The nice new shiny tank would have got very lonely waiting for the joined-up-moment!
For the Supporters - news regarding progress and the AGM is about to hit them.... Covid dictates that the meeting will be held on Zoom this Saturday.
I've reviewed the Newsletter - there are loads of nice pictures that you will like.
