Spanners

Hey all iv got some spanners but not 100% sure what there for
Iv got a BR one sized 5/8" at one end and alot smaller at the other but cant tell the size.
A LMS 3/4" sized 3/4" and 7/8"
and another LMS one what I was told was size 3/4" and 5/8" but dont think there are right.

Any ideas

Probably just company spanners from works or loco sheds. Not sure if they would be used for anything specific, or just part of an everyday toolkit.

Got a few from various companies myself, including a very old LNWR one...

Possibly the most identifyable spanner from a railway company would be a GWR / BR(W) Water gauge spanner.

 

Your most likly right, am going to take them to the Moors next time im up and try and find out.

Just in case you are not aware there are several ways of measuring spanners, the AF (across flats) and the bolt diameter, most railway spanners will be BSW, thus bolt diameter. However the standard bolt heads changed size during WW2 to save metal thus there are 2 heads sizes for a 5/8" bolt (and the other sizes as well), thus you may need a spanner size smaller than marked for a specific bolt.

The gauge frame spanner on Ebay seems rather expensive, you can get them cheaper than that, or at least I did a year ago.

 

You don't buy your spanners from the Snap-on van then, do you?!

Ah, the make do and mend attitude. No I don't feel so guilty about making tools for different jobs, rather than buying them!

 

Things have never been the same since they introduced metric threads. Everyone just carries an adjustable around now. My old Chief Engineer will be turning in his grave.

 

Oh don't be so despondent - some of us carry *two*! (A big one and a little one, for precision engineering, you see...)

 

There is always the really accuarate spanner you can get that is calibrated in thousands of an inch, just don't put to much force on them as the jaws are no very wide so may mark the nuts or bolts =P~

 

One of the S & T guys at work dug a GWR gauge frame spanner out of the ground when he was diverting cables at the site of the old Reading shed a couple of months ago. He offered it to me for £1. Should have snatched his arm off and put it on e-bay for that price. It cleaned up quite well considering!

 

Well it has got those three little letters cast into it, that automaticly triple the price...

 

Really? I thought they were 'G' clamps!
