A tip for using brass screws. Find an identical steel screw. Use the steel screw, fasten tightly. Then remove, replace with the softer brass screw.

how about coating the brass screw with something like copper slip, or copper grease ?would that prevent the screw from binding in the hole next time you come to remove it?

Ive never come across someone using copper grease on brass screws before.
I will give an example of perfectly fitted steel screws. On Thursday last week. Myself and a colleague were removing a bottom panel of a 1941 built GWR composite, 7284. Just over 2/3rds of the screws were GWR originals and they came out an absolute dream and are perfectly reuseable. The screws on the bottom stringer had been replaced when the coach had arrived on the Svr in the late 60s/ early 70s with twin thread "coated" screws. All of these either snapped or resembled nails. On removing the knee irons. The 2 bolts that go through the upright of the body had been coated in tallow and again are perfectly reuseable. The 2 bolts going down through the bottom stringer. Are still attached to the knee iron having rust welded together.

If a screw is fitted correctly with the correct pilot hole there is no reason is cannot last. The problem is they dont make screws like they used to. Its why we crave any GKN/ Nettlefolds original screws.

Are you looking for steel or brass GKN Nettlefolds?

Where's this from? I've been quite keen to read about the new base but all's been fairly quiet (not surprisingly) on that front lately.

EDIT; their Facebook page. No more info about plans, though.

Worth exploiting their German connections and asking whether any ex-Reichsbahn TT's are available. There seem to be a number still in situ at disused roundhouses.

Surely it's not beyond the A1SLT to make their own 'table from scratch. As after all they've already built a Peppercorn A1 and are well on their way with a P2, not to mention acquiring parts for their next locomotive the V4........

Not sure as there is room at Darlo. unless it could be produced in sections, someone like CTL seal could probably knock one up (see Clan or B17 thread)

A German one could be handy, put them on the same ship as the boiler...

You could just turn up an adapter. Does anyone have a lathe with a 70' capacity...?

Cleveland Bridge & Engineering are nearby, aren't they? I'd have thought making a turntable would be childs play to them! Failing that, as others have said, there seem to be a fair few left in Germany.

Turntables are one of those things, they seem very simple (relatively), but the skill of building something that long that balances on a small (relatively) pivot in the middle is a lot of experience and "knack".

The ELR got a turntable out of Germany years ago. It was never installed. Probably a load of rust now.

There is an unused GWR 65' turntable still at Swindon works. No idea if it is available but it hasn't been used since the works closed.
