Thanks for the debate - very interesting.

The hornblocks for 72010 are castings with a machining allowance that are welded into the frames. We arranged for a horizontal bar to be part of the pattern so that the bottom edge of the hornblock was supported while it was being welded into the frame. You can see the stub of the support in some of the earlier photos. At a later stage of assembly, a steel liner is bolted to the hornblocks. This is in the form of a shallow U shape so it wraps round the main face and the side faces. Manganese steel liners are welded to the main face and the outer side face of the liner. The faces of the hornblocks have now been machined flat and square to the centreline of the frames and the holes for the liner holding down bolts have been drilled and spotfaced. When the cylinders are fitted we will re-check alignment to make sure the axle centres are square to the centreline of the cylinders. Depending on the readings, we may have to do a final adjustment to bring the axle centrelines square to the cylinder centreline by in-situ grinding. At this stage it will only be taking off thousands of an inch off, rather than the fractions of an inch that have just been taken off by milling on the machining centre.

"presumably the kit that CT Seal have makes it easy as once it's got the frames located and datum set, it can move and track accordingly." Yes that's basically it; the machine does allow us to machine across the frames as a pair so we ensure that each hornguide is aligned with the other

Quick update. Both pony or trailing truck wheels have been cast at Boro Foundry in Stourbridge. The trailing truck for 72010 is the same as the design for 71000 Duke of Gloucester with coil springing. See https://www.theclanproject.org/Clan_News.php

Some of this is shown on the news page of the website, I think? I hadn’t appreciated how regularly that was updated. Perhaps it would be worthwhile links to updates being posted on here to encourage interest and funding?!

    aaaaaargh! There are *videos* too...
It's bad enough having the continuous stream of interesting news items, but videos as well...

JOOI, IIRC, you cast the bogie wheels some time ago I seem to recall pics of them cooking nicely to finish off). Are they the same size as the trailing truck wheels? If so, is there a reason (other than filthy lucre) as to why they weren't all cast in one batch?

    Hello 26power

We aim to put as much detail as possible on the website. We have a working day at CTL Seal every Monday and we try to update the web site in the evening

Bikermike - you guessed the answer - money! The pattern for the trailing truck wheels was at the Mid Hants Railway - we could only get access to it when they opened up after the summer lockdown

The bogie wheels are 3 foot diameter whereas the trailing truck wheels are 3' 3.5". The cannon boxes for the bogie are on order at South Lincs Foundry and we're finalising the machining requirements.

    Ian

Yes, appreciate there is good and extensive information there and it is interesting to see it. As a new member on here though I was not as aware of that until your post earlier today, which prompted my visit. Might it be worth considering a brief post on here when a new news update is posted on the website? I appreciate that is something else to do so just a thought!

In Ian's defence, there are several other Clan supporters on here and we try to bring progress events to this forum, but there is a fairly constant/frequent progress that it is hard to keep track of sometimes. Especially as we are currently in a very special sequence with the erection/machining of the frames. Ian has a lot of other things to do as well. Perhaps a Communications /Media person could take some of this on??
I would guess that most Clan supporters keep a frequent check on the website 'News', though quite often little snippets creep on to here before that site.
The tender wheels are the same diameter as the pony truck, have I got that the right way round, and it is a bit expensive to cast an extra 6 at present, money can be used elsewhere, like the cannon boxes!!

    Hi.

My suggestion wasn't just for Ian to do the posting! It sounds like normally the news is updated on a Monday, so presumably any Clan supporter could post a link? If nothing else it would keep this thread at or close to page 1 of this part of the forum and therefore "visible". Or, is there a way to get an email when a new "news" item is posted on the website, as there is for some blogs?

As you suggest, maybe a Communications/Media person might be appropriate, but they still need to get the information to post from others.

Anyway, just thoughts to help raise awareness. I know I'm better informed about this project since recently joining this forum and reading this thread and therefore going to the website.

    All the best.

To pick up on the previous comments about Communications/Media person sometimes I do add items here, though Ian is so quick to do so that as often as not he beats me to it. Also, Ian takes almost all of the pictures that appear in the news section of the website so obviously, he has first access to them.

On the other hand, there are two Facebook pages for supporters which are also updated on a Monday. The photographs here are usually taken by Chris Jones, or occasionally by myself, which provide different photographs from the main website. These pages are The Clan Project Building 72010 Hengist and 72010 Hengist: The Clan Project Fan Group. The first of these is the official project page set up by myself and the second was set up by Arron Qualls and is based in the USA. Arron has granted me, administrator status for his page so I can control to a large extent what is posted there.

I have also been asked to provide photographs to two other Facebook pages recently. These are Steam Trains in the UK and Rail Thing - New Build Steam Locomotives. This I have been doing for the last couple of weeks.

Please, everyone, take a look at one or other of these pages for more photographs of progress. You might be surprised at what is there...

    Great Bob,
Perhaps we have so many avenues for publicity that we cannot keep up with them, certainly not a point to complain about nowadays, we have so much to publicize!!!
Not all of us use Social Media of course so we can miss those snippets.

This is one of Ian's photos that I use as the new cover for the project Facebook page.
I don't think this one has been used on the website. It's a stunning image in my opinion.

    John,
I take your point about social media, so here is the cover page photograph of our own Facebook page. It is one of Ian's pictures

I agree Bob, especially with Luke to give the scale. Next milestone is to see the frames right way up and complete with the other parts fitted.
You are all doing a great job, hopefully the AGM will take place in 2021 and we can all celebrate the progress.

I am sat here just wondering if the latest 'Pandemic' restrictions will have much effect on the progress in Sheffield. At least we can be confident that CTL Seal won't permit any risks on their premises.
Hope the 'gang' are taking care of themselves.

We were at CTL today. the first thing I did was ask Andy England if we could continue to attend on Mondays. His response was immediate. Yes. he wants us to be there so that if the need arises ha can come to us for a quick consultation. We have to follow all the rules that CTL have set for both their own workforce and for visitors/contractors. As we have been doing this for weeks now nothing has changed. So keep looking at the website. The update will continue.

So we are now working on the front buffer beam. I wonder if the question of hot-rivetting has been decided?
(See the website News page https://www.theclanproject.org/Clan_News.php) Then 'Hammer and Tongs' might return!!
