This is all very well but the idea is you have to post on the correct page number!

Yes, but I was just upholding the latest West Somerset management tradition of ignoring the rules of the game, deciding I wanted to do it this way and pushing ahead regardless. See everyone Barrie is now an engine number troublemaker !!! ;):Happy::Happy::Happy::Happy:

There are what appear to be visible stays on the firebox. Did these locos have no cladding there?

By my reckoning thats a DR Class 53

Having driven a DR Class 52 - PKP class TY2 as opposed to the post war versions the TY42, the TY2's & by inference TY3's give me the creeps. Not though the TY42's

    Lovely loco's but.................

I suspect they are tell-tale hollow stays. If they break, you’ll get a leak of steam, which helps maintenance. Seemed to be fairly common in US practice but not the UK.

I think that they are holes in the boiler cladding for the reason Tom says and not the actual stays that can be seen. I'm surprised that the tell tale stay didn't find more favour in the UK. It would save a lot of hammering by the boiler inspector.

Yes, they are, but it does get much colder in some parts of the USA that here as you will know and as I mentioned some switchers spend a lot of time going in the reverse direction. :Cold:

They also let air into the grate as the fuel was often claggy ans poor quality needing air higher up the bed than uk style engines

Sorry to disagree with you but I don’t think that these have anything to do with combustion air. They are pitched at stay centres and go right down to just above foundation ring level. If they were for air they would soon get blocked.

Look! People were playing soooo nicely on this thread and then @Steve comes along and starts arguing. We know what happens when you start arguing, don't we?!

Anyone got any more lovely photos of chuffy things, preferably with their firebox stays fully covered?!

Problem is, there's a bunch of hard nuts who tend to be rather volatile and swear that fresh air should be imposed from the top. But there's a bunch of softies who are a bit friable and are adamant that fresh air should rise up from the bottom. And since they can't agree, doors get opened and then shut, and no one can agree on how to control the dampers, and next thing you know the whole thing is clinkered to hell ...

There’s no argument. Once you open the dampers, they stay open. Simples.

Can I highlight the serendipitous moment when both the WSR and Brexit threads are on page 1,667.

It's a race to see which one gets to 2,000 first so post early and post often!
