The Stephenson Railway Museum is now open for it's summer season. The museum is open every Saturday and Sunday from 11am till 4pm and is open 7 days a week during school holidays.

The museum houses many unique locomotives and rolling stock including a 1904 NER parcels van, the only survivor of its kind from the original electrified North Tyneside Loop. We also have the only working example of an electric locomotive from the Harton Colliery System. (Operates on certain days throughout the season)

The North Tyneside Railway operates every Sunday and Bank Holiday throughout the summer. The line offers a 3 mile round trip from the Museum Station to Percy Main where evidence of the old Blyth and Tyne line and ex railway buildings are apparent to those with a keen eye. Trains are steam hauled where possible though diesel may be used at short notice. Trains depart the museum at 11.30, 12.30, 13.30 and 14.30.

Hi, I came for a quick look this afternoon and it took a few wrong turns to find it. Where are the direction signs? I'm sure there used to be more than that, mind you I was coming from North Shields.
Now I have found my way again I'll give it another try another weekend.
    All the best.

Sorry about that mate, we have been on to North Tyneside Council time and time again about improving the signage but to no avail unfortunately. The museum and railway are on Middle Engine Lane which runs between the Shiremoor Farm pub and Silverlink Retail Park. It is almost opposite the old Siemens building and adjacent to the Audi Garage.

Here are some photos of a visit in September 2017.

The loco in steam was Kitson long boiler 0-6-0PT Class A No 5, built in 1883.

There is much else of interest including a very early George Stephenson 0-4-0 'Billy', now thought to have been built at Killingworth 1815 - 1820. (See Michael R Bailey's book Loco-motion: The world's oldest steam locomotives, published by History Press in 2014.)

Thanks for the posting - they seem to have some very interesting items on display there, so will have to put it on the list of places to visit.
Certainly wasn't aware of the Ransomes & Rapier interlocking frame being on display there.

Their immaculate restoration of Harton Railway's E4 is one of my favourites. The locomotive looks superb, and its a tangible reminder of how outward looking some of the mining companies on Tyneside were. It would be great if they could take the other surviving Harton locos under their wing. I think the Tanfield host one built by AEG, and I remember seeing a tiny four wheeled electric at Beamish years ago.

There are some nice pictures of E4 on the Tanfield Railway's blog: https://tanfield-railway.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/harton-electric-loco-e4.html

Return of operations at the North Tyneside steam railway has seen 401 doing the honours.
Socially distanced services have been busy. Nice to see 401 out in her new livery too.

The North Tyneside Steam Railway is hosting its 30th Anniversary Gala, on the 9th - 11th July.
Visiting locos are the J27 courtesy of NELPG and Backworth 49 making its first return to its old stomping ground courtesy of the Tanfield Railway.

Intensive timetable, with both passenger & freight trains.
