    Here's a 'Bantam' army connection:
    https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/The-Bantam-Battalions-of-World-War-One/

However, "The cantankerous 18th Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry" might be a tad too long to fit on the side of the smokebox.

I really don't get the fascination with killing machines. If it were me i'd celebrate one of Gresleys design team on the original locos. So many unsung engineers in our business.

The excursion from Edinburgh Train station was being pulled by the Dave Steam train which is only a few years old and is a full size model of a much older one from Doncaster waffle waffle...
    Yep fits nicely

Can't call it 'Dave' as the new F35 Lightning II's have been given that nickname by UK air enthusiasts, so that would be a second RAF fast jet connection... ;)

Does it really need a name?- I guess its probably a marketing thing.

The P2 being called Prince of Wales I find a bit daft- Duke of Rothesay would seem more in keeping with the originals.

I suppose pandering to people who are into the Royals probably helps fundraising though.

Give it as stupid a name as they have the new P2 (Prince Charles I ask you (why aren't we a republic by now?)) and it will not be getting any of my money. The V4 (and the V1/3 tank if I live long enough) I really would like to see. (the P2 as well if named something suitably Scottish and intimidating!) I think the V4 should be called Bantan Hen as 3402 was never officially named (or call it Silkie!)

Glad someone else thinks the same about the P2.

There has been some sort of twinning ceremony with the aircraft carrier and the P2 team.
I can’t be bothered with a naming debate right now with something that hasn’t been built yet.
Personally I’m a lot more concerned about what coat of paint it will wear...;)

How about Steamy McSteam Face? After all there was "popular demand" to call the new Arctic Icebreaker Boaty McBoat Face. Though they saw the light and picked a more sensible name Sir David Attenbrough.

May I suggest "Bantam" this would honour the below minimum height regiments of WW1 who suffered heavily, and keep faith with Gresley's originals as well, without ruffling any feathers(sorry)

Just my opinion no offence intended.

These racehorse names do sound "daft" these days but when they were selected they were totally in accordance of the times they were chosen-------the 1920's, 30's, and 40's. The horses were all winners of Classic races and were house hold names. The working man then followed "The Sport of Kings" much more enthusiastically and knowledgeably than they do today, indeed for a lot of working men following "the dogs and 'orses were their sole recreation.

To a lot of us young lads the names were both mysterious and mellifluous and without the internet utterly bemusing, Blink Bonny, Sayajirao, Galtee More, Hyperion, Spion Kop, Chamossaire etc.

I do not recall anyone not approving the names chosen for the Deltics, all classic winners and completely appropriate for the east coast main line, is it because these names had been heard and seen on the media of the 50's and 60's.

I support the A1 group wholeheartedly but the chosen name for 2007 leaves be totally indifferent, but I completely understand why, but I would love 3402 to be given a Scottish name in line with the K4's and P2's, A1's and A2's, as post 562 stated another killing machine looks like it might be chosen.
    3402 Madge Wildfire anyone !!

Spent nine years waiting for Hal 'o the Wynd------did it ever reach London ?

Absolutely this. The P2 especially should have been "Duke of Rothesay" given the loco's background but I'm not sure how many people beyond dedicated Royal watchers would know that the heir to the throne also has the above title. Do they plan to name the V3 and K3 as well?

To be fair, a racehorse name, unless it is Betty Swollocks is unlikely to provoke too much controversy. Although the owners of said horse might. I do seem to recall that at least one former owner was described in the press as an arms dealer.

As a Bantam is any small bird and a true Bantam a small chicken, there are plenty of Bantams to choose from. Naming it after a bird/wildlife would fit in with LNER traditions and I think be a lot more neutral.

So ideally, a small scottish animal or bird.

Ok to be serious this time and linking into Monkey Magic's post. Here goes a few Scottish bird names/types.- Ptarmigan [it's pronounced "Tarmigan" with a silent P]. Hen Harrier, Bonxie [Great Skua] or Corncrake.

When Charles becomes King, then it might be fitting to re-name the loco Duke of Rothesay , depending on the view of the new Prince of wales by then, he might even be chuffed at the thought of having his own steam loco named after him, as long as he don't commandeer it and the royal train for a villa match day trip for him and his friends
