Chieftain as a name is a good choice. Some might get a little bit twitchy about the MBT connection, I don't have any problem with that side of things but if you look up the word chieftain it means the leader of a tribe or group. And given that most are familiar with Scotland and the Clans plus the historical connection of the design with the West Highlands it looks to be a very suitable name for 3403. The list of synonyms for the word should also give some clues, as does the word itself, with regard to what is considered to be expected of the locomotive when it is produced.

The name is very much a part of the fund raising and attracting support is vital, you could argue that you don't have to name a locomotive, which is true at one level but if a name helps you to get your project built you would be foolish not to select those plates wisely.

Now off to have quick look at Chaos Theory perhaps better known as the WSR.

I digress, but the sooner SCC evict the Wretched Somerset Railway, tear up the track for scrap and give the trackbed to Sustrans the better.

Thing is, there's plenty of projects quietly progressing without feeling the need to give the loco a name - the NER G5 project and 82045 come immediately to mind.

The name of "Tornado" doesn't really fit in with the naming of the original A1s, which were admittedly named after various things such as birds, racehorses, former railway companies, railwaymen and even literature! But I've seen nobody question that choice yet. Although I quite like the name "Tornado" - even ignoring the RAF reference, the word "tornado" invokes a sense of power (something which 60163 certainly has!)

As for the idea of giving the new-builds names, I'm not against the idea for the A1 et al. as the A1s and P2s all had names, as did half of the original V4s(!). But I wouldn't mind names that fit in with the general theme(s) of the names of the original engines. But for types of tank engines with no precedent (G5, 3MT), I'm not a fan.

Wow! A name debate running even faster than a livery debate. But will the A1 Trust invite supporters to suggest names and then short list a few for voting, or will the name be decided on high?

good point. Sensible railways like the LYR never bothered with names at all. What's more, all their engines were painted black!

"Bantam Major" has a military ring to it.

The North British Atlantic and Scott Class names provide a rich range of possibilities. From the serious sounding "Highland Chief" to "Hal o' the Wynd" and "Wandering Willie" (Named after the NBR & LNER Board Chairman, William Whitelaw?). The LNER also gave NBR-type names to the "Scottish Directors", so "Butler Henderson" was supplemented by "Flora MacIvor" and "Luckie Mucklebackit".

Full name lists in the LNER Encyclopedia, eg:

That has a definite ring to it. Perhaps the A1 Trust could encourage the Prime Minister to be a patron of the project? You know, in recognition of a distinguished political lineage ...

Trimbush was a Peppercorn A2 built in May '48. Pretty Polly was an A1 later an A3 and was named after an Irish bred racehorse which won 22 out of 24 races, 15 consecutively and was second in the remaining two races. Apart from success on the track this thoroughbred became the the Broodmare of the most successful female family in thoroughbred racing. I knew that the LNER liked to name Pacifics after notable racehorses but I had to look this one up. I had no idea that it was so outstanding. Daft name? No.

I can appreciate the V4 will carry a name, but look forward (when they eventually get around to it) to seeing an un-named K3. Now that will be something I will look forward to in my old age!

To adapt the words of a former leader, the present administration has a Wandering Willie but lacks a Whitelaw.
