Also, the cause of the accident was attributed to the lightly-laid track and sub-base, not the locomotive. The Maunsell River class rode very well when tested on LNER metals, with Gresley present to view the proceedings.

This might have been mentioned, but what chance a LNER P1 using Scotsman’s spare boiler and some of the P2 patterns?

Might be worth having a word with LSL about using what’s now their boiler.

What I ‘love’ about this forum is that you can’t ask a question without being shot down. I was simply asking a question about what was needed to build a P1. I’m not actually considering doing it! I’ve no intention of starting up a Facebook group, and am fully aware of the ownership of the A3 boiler.

Unfortunately, many people are put off volunteering and supporting our railways due to the perceived ‘clique mentality’, which sadly is reinforced by the responses that questions get on here.

Sad really. When there’s a volunteer shortage across the sector and an ageing workforce.

And why, pray, does that surprise you? I mean ... it's not as if you've even told us what livery this P1 should wear !!! :Punch:

Scotsman's spare boiler was an A4 type 250lb boiler. It was in fact 4470's boiler for a while as a Thompson Pacific, I recall (or it was Bittern's is now?) - either way, it's the wrong type for a P1 boiler, which was either the original 180lb or the revised A3 type.

I've just bought a copy of Yeadon's Register for the eight-coupled Gresley locomotives.

I must admit, I do think the P1s looked really well-proportioned (especially after removal of the booster). If one had survived, I'm sure it would have been preserved.
As it is, there just isn't the work to warrant building one. Its Main Line speed would be 50mph, and there isn't a preserved line which could make full use of one.
Having said that, it would be interesting to see what a P1 would be like with long-travel gear, either with a 180Lb or 220Lb boiler fitted.

    Richard.

I'm not sure how you'd do that. The original design with short travel valves and 180 p.s.i. pressure could shift anything the LNER would put behind it, and a lot more than that. What one with long valve travel and 220 p.s.i. available could do is rather mind blowing!

I doubt the big railway could even make use of it to full capacity. Are there any slow slogging freights now?

One of the main criticisms of steam on the big railway is poor acceleration. An upgraded P1 should have very good acceleration.
I forgot to mention, a 250 psi A4 boiler and double Kylchap too, please.

Up to about 50 mph. Then what? Pointless out-running the electric behind at the start only to be sidelined a couple of miles later so that it can pass you.
