    This is only my personal feeling but, I always thought that as 32678 it didn't look right with the small bunker, as its not authentic in that guise, I would have preferred it to have retained the IOW bunker and at least been authentic , historically the only livery it could carry with that earlier style of bunker would have been SR Green, as any time post that, it carried the IOW modifications, even Southern Black as 2678 post dated the modifications as the engine didn't get re numbered until its repatriation from the Island .

    Apart from any "authenticity" considerations, the enlarged bunker was done for a reason that remains valid today,

    For those who keep track of these things. D4118 (08888) today worked its first passenger train in preservation, due to a problem with the rostered steam loco.

    I was not present but understand the steam loco was back in service later in the day.

    I know most of the current services have been hauled by 21 & 25 presumably due to costs just wondered if 4144 was planned to be in use at any point? Many Thanks.

    Seagull will be able to advise bettter, but I think the plan at present is to use 21, 25 and 1638, which returned to steam this weekend.

    I heard that the air pump in the background used to have bumps in it.
    When it stuck and wouldn't work, it was j - u - s - t within reach of the fireman and his coal hammer :)

    I think such tender exhortations to work were far from uncommon ...

    Take a look here - plenty of dents to be seen on pretty much all the examples where the pump can be clearly seen.

    Looking for details of these pumps I stumbled on this site http://www.catskillarchive.com/rrextra/chapt21.Html which includes an explanation of its working and the comment " Should the pump happen to stop working, the cause is mysterious, like many other mysteries; and the natural remedy suggested, is to hit the thing on the head with a monkey-wrench." It also explains why this is not good practice and what and engineman should do to restore proper operation.

    That paper is wonderful in the way it combines detailed instruction with the wider whys and where fires; the digression into the nature of laziness particularly brilliant.

    K&ESR Terrier no.3 had its air pump removed when it was purchased from the LBSCR in 1901. It managed without air brakes until 2006 when it emerged from overhaul with the pump restored (probably not the same one). Just idle curiosity but does anyone know:
    1. Why it was removed;
    2. Why it was put back after 105 years.
