Why it was removed: Probably because the brakes were substituted for vacuum brakes. A few Terriers were thus treated, sometimes - but not always - if they were sold to railways that had vac braked stock. Recovery of the pump and brake valve for spares would have been of value if no longer required.

Stepney was another one, and no longer has air brakes to this day. "Newington" (ex-No. 46) had the Westinghouse brakes removed when sold to the LSWR in 1903 and remained vacuum-only when bought by the Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport, as did No. 54 "Waddon" when sold to the SE&CR; both subsequently had the gear refitted. "Newington" in 1924 by the Southern Railway, when it also had the enlarged IoW bunker fitted; the loco is now W8 on the IoWSR. "Waddon" I'm not sure when, but possibly in 1932, when it was overhauled and became the Lancing Works shunter, for which a dual-braked loco would have been useful.

Why it was put back? Authenticity reasons?

    Runs like clockwork.

Something quite ‘Hornby clockwork’ about the signal-signal box-Loco combination captured at Northiam this lunchtime.

    Delightful.

Most incidents where the pump stops are due to it running low on oil. I've never understood why the company didn't think to provide much larger oil reservoirs...

Having no leaks in the brake air system helps. If the pump isn’t chuntering away all the time it uses less oil.

Oiling provision on Westinghouse pumps did improve, with air operated mechanical lubricators on the cross-compounds and tandem compounds heavily used in the US and in Europe. Just that post-grouping any Westinghouse-fitted engine was a legacy system as far as the major UK companies were concerned, I doubt any of them bought a single pump after the last of the B12s and N7s were built in 1928, with equipment corresponding to Great Eastern standards. I don't think the 6"/6.5" pump changed much from the days of the Gladstones to the last B12s, and the 8"/8.5" was a pre-war design too. So they suffered from being obsolete standards; the railways weren't interested in updating them, and doing so would interfere with standardisation. Perhaps a system where the pumps were a necessary fact of life like the IoW or GE suburban system might have instituted unofficial improvements, but I suspect they prided themselves on looking after the pumps and getting good results.

Thanks, and yes a good point, they were effectively obsolete, but did stay in use for many years, well into BR days in LBSCR territory and others.

I work on the IOWSR and the pumps on the Ivatts for example need filling after two trips. Now I guess with a short line and lots of running round we use them intensively, but on a longer GE suburban run with frequent stops I guess they just accepted filling up at each end. Perhaps even a double size oil tank wouldn't have lasted much longer, so wouldn't have given much benefit.

How long does the oil last on the KESR terriers out of interest?

Has the extended bunker been put back on, to make it accurate for the livery it now carries?

    It’s alive!

That special moment in a restoration when a loco has a fire in it for the first time. Photo: Dan Dickson.

Well done to all involved in the restoration.

    Crafted with love.

A splendid photo by Liam Edward James Head which shows the care and attention that has gone into the restoration of Terrier 2678 at Rolvenden.
