    From a PW point of view, if the BORG controlled the tracks and got rid of the trains then we could get on and renew everything.

    Seen the vids, thought they had done a good job TBH, it looks stunning and a little like the pullman and I'm delighted that 43's can live on doing stuff like this. It needs buffers tho.

    ''In 1987, as electrification of the East Coast Main Line was under way, British Rail realised that the new Mark 4 carriages for the Class 89 and Class 91 locomotives were not going to be finished in time for the introduction of electric services on the East Coast Main Line so, in late 1987, a total of eight Eastern Region power cars (Numbers 43013/014/065/067/068/080/084/123) conversions (on 43014/123) were carried out at the Derby Engineering Development Unit, whilst the other six (43013/065/067/068/080/084) were converted by the diesel repair shop at Stratford to have the lower valancing removed and buffers fitted.
    After being fitted with buffers, these power cars began work as surrogate DVTs to work with the Class 91s and 89. The locomotives, working with conventional Mk3 stock, worked on the line between 1987 and 1991, when the last Class 91 locomotives entered service. As well as buffers being fitted to these powercars, special remote control equipment was also added to the locomotives so they could be controlled by the locomotive at the front''. <BJ>

    Why did an HST power car running as a DVT need buffers while one running as part of an HST set did not? Isn't the need to couple to another loco in abnormal circumstances equally likely or unlikely in both cases?

    Anyway I agree that the ersatz Blue Pullman looks good. I look forward to a ride when it's legal and I can feel safe.

    At the time, locomotives fitted with drop-head buckeye couplings could not be attached to ordinary HST power cars using the standard bar coupling carried on power cars so if the TDM wasn't working the loco couldn't be coupled to the London end of the train. Subsequently, a new bar coupling was developed that would fit buckeye fitted locos.

    Thank you. That makes sense. Presumably TDM failure, requiring a loco to be attached at the DVT end, was more likely than failure of the front power unit of an HST in combination with failure of the control link to the rear power car.

    If it runs will it get past Carnforth. The line has been closed all day due to flooding. At various places including Melling tunnel and Wennington

    Is there an alternative route they can use or could they stable 45596 at Carnforth for a while until she can make it back to the KWVR?

    The Alton line also had a number of cancellations today as shown on RTT. Caused by the weather conditions I guess.

    The only problem with that option is that the engine would arrive tender first at Keighley, the same if it ran via Leeds

    By good fortune I'm at Acton Works today looking at S Stock gearboxes, so hopefully can nip out and see it later.

    Don't forget the route might be constrained by in date gauging assessments. Hence going via Carnforth.
