As laid out eloquently by John Palmer, there are very significant costs and risks in moving. But I agree they'll be better off away from the snake-pit WSR.

Especially if the talk of a joint LSWR/ S&D Museum bears fruit and of course. it will give the trust the opportunity to see their engine, working with a decent freight rake behind it, comprising some of their own wagons, and those of the WHR wagon group , hopefully 53808 will go on to be overhauled at the MHR, for me though, hopefully the highlight in a few years time will be to see 506, 499 and 53808 all in steam together taking turns on a freight engine gala.

Reading the above statement posted on this forum. Does anyone know if 53808 will become a long term residence loco.

    thanks

that, as they say is in the lap of the gods, Personally, I would be very surprised if the WSR PLC, hold to their side of the agreement to overhaul the engine, plus would you trust an plc who has evicted you, after 40 years, to stick to any agreement? I would expect the S&D trustees to be very careful about accepting any thing that may be offered by the board of the West Somerset Railway.

I very much hope that she will become a permanent fixture of the MHR fleet.
It will be like she has gone back home to the S&D when she is in steam alongside the resident Bulleid Pacifics, a Standard Five, several Standard Fours and an Ivatt Tank.
Fingers crossed the owners will decide to keep her at Ropley.

Let's hope a way is found for HP to continue in some way. Obviously Ian's health is his priority and I wish him and the team the very best for the future.

We're going to need some bigger sidings...

You need one of these - the high-rise solution to lack of siding space ...

Are multi level sidings still within the permitted development rights for a Light Railway?

Well I recall that the MHR has a well led, half decent, engineering facility there so why on earth would the S&DRT need to go anywhere else to have their loco overhauled?

Because the WSR are contractually obliged to overhaul it...

Actually they are obliged to fund it, could easily be done at a Ropley or anywhere with the WSR footing the bill.

I'm not privy to all the discussions, but I believe only some of the wagon fleet will be coming to MHR at the moment (though which specifically I do not know - the LSWR Brake I would personally like to see...) Two vehicles have been sold and will be leaving in due course which will be making some space for those arriving.

One of the observations made was that a lot of the stock is unfitted, which will limit its use in a demonstration freight train, especially one where passengers are intended to be carried on the brake van, so any that arrive as such I foresee perhaps being made into some sort of display - perhaps grouped up with the MHR's own 8 plank wagon that is confined to static display?

Does the MHR not run unfitted goods trains then?

No, though we do run part-fitted trains sometimes. All the running wagons are at least through-piped. Perhaps some of the more interesting S&DRT wagons could be piped?

That comment gave me "one of those moments". Cast your mind back to when wrecks were still being extracted from Barry ...... and now tell me it isn't amazing that the choice which Pete highlights is actually a perfectly realistic option these days. Our movement has indeed come a very long way.

especially if the majority of the work is boiler work My hope is that an informal working agreement can be struck between the urie group, and the S&D Trust whereby once 499 is done, that the urie group assist the trust in the work needed on 53808 and the boiler shop do the more specialised work on the boiler. .

But guards always put up side lights on the van. And then leave the red mask in when running bang road, or in a siding. Ops manager said :Resistanceisfutile:.
