    THE JACOBITE ECS 7th NOVEMBER

One or two more photos from a stunning day on Saturday for the ecs working to Carnforth - a day with conditions reminiscent of the SRPS specials that worked south in November in the early 1990s.

Great stuff. Well done for finding that gap in the tree cover above Loch Long. I knackered myself the other year looking for a shot there without success. Did you walk from the narrow road that eventually leads to the A82?

There has been a bit of tree clearance along the line above Loch Long, with two gaps now available. My shot was taken from the large hill overlooking the trail that runs from the Glen Douglas road near the summit down to the A82. A long walk down the trail and then a steep climb up the hill provided the vista of the loch.

Thanks I did go down there but obviously before they cleared the trees. I did read of a lab to do a lot of clearance to give passengers a view down the loch, I don’t know what happened to that

Lovely pictures from all, thanks for sharing. I have noticed a few like this and its a simple and probably silly query, why does 45212 carry the headboard there rather than the top bracket?

Because she does not have a top bracket. As the owners, the KWVR want her to remain as she was when withdrawn in 1968, by which time most locos had had their top bracket relocated to the left side of the smoke box to reduce the danger from the proximity to the overheads when putting up a lamp on the top. Carnforth's 8F is similar, but on that an unobtrusive bracket is fixed to the smokebox handrail so that a headboard can be carried in its proper location. This is a far more aesthetically pleasing solution to my mind but the loco is not mine, nor Ian Riley's for that matter, so it is the owners decision. But yes , a headboard does look naff on that bracket.

Thanks both, I must confess I had not looked at the photos that closely, I agree on the naff comment though, although its nowt to do with me!

I think 5212 does have a top lamp bracket which is removed when it returns to Keighley as per @torgormaig 's reply.

It ran at least one season (last year) with the bracket fitted, so the Jacobite headboard went in the normal position, but this year the bracket was not put back on.

It did not last very long and was removed by mid season I believe at the Worth Valley's request - more's the pity.

Thanks for linking my shot Ian and also for the explanation,I was puzzled why it had changed when I saw the loco working the service this year

I guess that this fits into the 2020 rather than the 2021 thread but here is a bit of a heads up for a program on BBC Alba which promises to be interesting. At 21.00 on New Years Eve - well lets face it none of us are going out to celebrate this year so this has to be the best option on tele that night - there is an hour long program about the construction of the Mallaig Extension of the West Highland line as told through the recently discovered photographs of the lines building. It includes interviews with Scotrail Conductor Trevor MacMillan and well respected retired driver Alec Iain Macdonald. OK, both are Gaelic speakers and the program is broadcast in that language but it has English subtitles and will be well worth watching I'm sure. I doubt that many of us will be able to see it live but it should be available on Catch Up afterwards. Hope you all enjoy it

Is it not possible to change your BBC iplayer settings to location = Scotland and watch it there?
