LADAS came from Lady Diana Assheton Smith*

*the 'D' may have been Daphne

Yes, what I am trying to work out is if Ladas the horse was named after Laura Alice Duff Assherton Smith or if it is just a very weird co-incidence.

According to Wackypedia Ladas the horse was owned by Lord Rosebery not the Asheton Smiths so I'm none the wiser either! Strange co-incidence as you say.

In trying to find out if there was any connection (I have failed thus far) I did find this line about Lord Rosebery's daughter...

Unless Lord R named said racehorse after Lady D and the loco got named after the horse. Not too sure how much of a compliment that'd have been tho'!

In similar vein, there's a J class racing yacht named Velsheda, which took the initial letters from the commissioning owners' daughters, Velma, Sheila and Daphne
