The thing is the extension has been funded by the group building it. Via their own appeals or grant applications. From what I believe there has been nothing / very minimal financial support from the operational end of the railway.

Well. See below, copied from Facebook and posted this morning:

It is with a very heavy heart that we have taken the decision to cancel the Santa and Mince Pie Specials for 2020.

With the uncertainty surrounding further local area lockdown restrictions, there is no guarantee the majority of our passengers will be able to travel with us throughout December.

Everyone who has made a booking will be contacted during the next week via email regarding their booking. We are asking customers to not telephone the office but to respond to the email they receive. Due to furlough we are running the office with a skeleton staff. Facebook messages will not be responded to at the current time, emails will be answered but it will take a little longer than usual to respond.

Please bear with us during this unprecedented period. Your help and support during this difficult time is very much appreciated.

Again, our apologies, we hope to see you at Llangollen Railway in 2021.

given the mess that Llangollen finds itself in I do hope that outgoing officials don't seek legal recourse for their departure . Claims for constructive dismissal would be one insult too many

Not sure if this is being sensibly prudent or unduly timid.

    Sad, but inevitable, IMHO.

The lead times for orders of provisions and anything else needed for the event must make this inevitable.

Surely the last thing any railway needs, especially one with precarious finances, is a load of bills for mince pies etc and no way of selling them or recouping any of the expenditure incurred.

50:50 on that myself . In the railways parlous state committing to the costs of christmas gifts with the uncertainty of whether the trains would be able to run given the political changes of directions re covid feels an unenviable gamble to take . Revenue potential is high bit loss potential equally so . This really is a time for other lines to come together on this one and help Llangollen out

It may be more than that as the new directors may have more than one eye on the wrongful trading offence (whose suspension has not been extended), and ordering supplies on tick without knowing whether they could pay for them would not be a great defence.

Which is odd, when you think about it, as pretty much every central bank on the planet has been doing just that for best part of the last century.

For those who may not have fully realised, travelling to North Wales from England for anything other than the ‘essential travel’ type reasons has now been forbidden since 1st October (first because of Welsh local lockdown rules, then national Welsh lockdown, now England lockdown).

Whilst hopefully this will be lifted from early December, I’m far from convinced this will happen. If the case numbers are still higher in England than Wales I would think the Welsh government will continue to keep this sort of travel ban in place, with possible exceptions for seeing family over Christmas. Clearly the Llangollen Santa’s are very dependent on custom from the English side of the border, so as much as we all dislike the decision, it’s probably for the best as it really would be a toss of the coin.

I imagine the BofE is good for the cost of a few trays of vol-au-vents and a dozen cases of Veuve Twankey for its Christmas party.;)

Can someone explain what was wrong with the posts that got put at corwen as I saw a picture and they looked like good railway posts. We’re they not strong enough?

The posts are LCDR not GWR, but the main issue is the ugly horizontal cross-member between the two of them. I also question the round topped fence as looking like being from a kids play park, and the platform surface doesn't look very in keeping with the steam era either to my eye.

I know it has been heavily modified but Is there no chance the Llangollen could ever get back the original Corwen station which still exists but is now that Trailer place ?

You do have to remember it’s a new build station rather than a rebuilt of an existing one. Being an island platform on top of an embankment also creates issues with with what can be done with regard to platform surface.

We should commend the llangollen for getting to Corwen and creating the foundations of a new station and one that doesn't preclude continuing west .

Whilst not in keeping with the area I'm pleased the columns have been reused and once under a canopy with be less visible . I presume as it is a new station the tactile slabs have had to be used . I suspect in GWR terms in Wales there is limited inspiration for an Island platform on an embankment (Dovey Junction ?) and managing the requirements of the 21st century passenger with creating a station with both a GWR and a 1950's 60's vibe are a challenge. Best inspiration almost comes from stations on the Tyseley - Dorridge line .

No ramps apparent on the platform ends (maximise length I presume) and one side much shorter than the other . I presume there are reasons
