I was reading Warwickshire railways.com as I wanted to know more about the railway history around my university and while reading up on Nuneaton shed, something in particular caught my eye, in 1939 most of the allocation was, as expected ex LNWR locomotives. However the list also shows 3 ex L&Y class 27s, which are not on home territory, the LMS must have deployed them to other parts of the network and it got me thinking, just how far south did they actually get, bearing in mind the L&Y proper never went further south than Macclesfield.
If anyone has any extra information or knows where L&Y engines ventured it would be good to know.

I believe there was a L&YR Pug at Bristol, but those things got everywhere. One of the 2-4-2T was tried out of St Pancras.

I didn't know the L & Y got to Macc. Presumably it would have been over the LNWR from Manchester?

In preservation, Andy Booth's 52322 ran on the Spa Valley Railway a couple of years back. Eridge must be the furthest south for an L&Y engine if you count the preservation era. If you don't, all I can say is that the engine seemed to be very well liked during its stay. I for one certainly enjoyed the chance to enjoy "Horwich in the High Weald"!

BR database is a source http://www.brdatabase.info/classes.php?type=S&subtype=LMS&prg=LYR

You can also look at the Warwickshire sheds and see what was allocated there, for local history

Happy browsing, but make sure you keep up with the assignments!

I've seen a pre-grouping era photo of a 4-6-0 (Prince of Wales class, if memory serves) on a passenger working at Lewes, East Sussex. The caption indicated a cock-up by train control on through working from the LNW and stated that due to no gauging for the class being established, it was removed as soon as it was 'officially noticed' and LBSC motive power provided. I assume it was returned to home metals on the route by which it arrived.

So some made in overseas then, pretty far south indeed, did any of these not make it back, what class were they, 25s? 27s?

According to Barry Lane 32 class 27's went to France, 22 (with 8wh tenders) in March 1917 and the remaining 10 (with their own tenders) in October. All were returned to Horwich in 1919 and from then on could be identified by the square holes for side chains in the buffer beams.

I think as well lancashire & yorkshire engines ran on the south yorkshireman pre W.W. 2 from Bradford exchange via Huddersfield and towards penistone and then i think a G.C. engine took charge of the train at sheffield vic or penistone to Marylebone and the Lancashire and yorkshire had a line from Wakefield to Edlington near Doncaster that was more of a colliery line though and huges push pull railmotors used to do the passenger workings to the pits on that line if your meaning on the thread how far south L.Y.R. lines radiated south.

Pete Johnson in his book Through the links at Crewe describes a nightmare shift with class 27 52201 from Crewe to Shrewsbury with 38 empty cattle wagons. After hours and hours, vividly described in five pages of Johnson's inimitable prose, they get to Coleham shed and the foreman says : ah, 52201, been waiting for her, she's wanted for passenger work at Brecon. ' 'Good luck to them' replied Pete's driver, ' nothing but a load of scrap'.

So it might have been that one.

I seem to recall Brecon did have an allocation of lyr class 27's.
Having been a regular driver or fireman of 52322 for the last 25 years I'd say like most of the older engines you either get them from a crewing perspective or you don't.....

Isn’t a Prince of Wales LNWR? The question was about L&YR.

(I know they amalgamated just before the grouping, but I don’t think you’d call a PoW an L&YR loco).

    They were a bit closer to the L&YR than ROD 2-8-0s . . .
