I heard someone is planning on making an engine pink. It sounds like a joke but the person saying it was very clear that the engine is seriously becoming pink and he thinks the south Devon railway are doing this. Does anyone know what the engine is and if it’s going to be true as I think this is a bad colour for anything at the south Devon railway or any engine really.

Many engines were painted pink: that was the colour of the undercoat. There are rumours that one or two got out of works, either for trials or emergency substitution, with just the undercoat applied. I don't know.

Just out of interest, is the plan to release the engine about April 2021?

It was in SR a few months back (24th July), its for charity and is an industrial I think (might be NG??), I cannot for the life of me remember what loco or where it is.

Edit - This was the image supporting the story, looks like could be a USA Tank or equivalent

This isn’t the south Devon railway then as that don’t have narrow gauge engines. My friend will be pleased as this will have made him not pay his member

Why would it not be allowed? If the person concerned owns the locomotive then they are entitled to paint it any colour they like. They don't need approval from anyone.

What about the LFP (Livery Froth Police)!

As noted above, whilst I cannot remember the details its for charity in memory of possibly a child who passed (I am really trawling my memory here so this may be wrong, needs someone to find July/August SR) so good luck to them I say, as for the suggestion that someone would stop paying membership in protest, how sad.

Always thought a Merchant Navy would suit pastel shades, myself.

Hard to object, really. Some money and work being put into a loco, some money raised for charity, a bit of publicity for the railway. Everyone wins, except possibly the most dedicated of purist.

Can't say it's my bag aesthetically, but what does that matter?

Do you remember Royal Scot when it was restored at the old LNWR Co Ltd at Crewe. That was not far away from being pink.

You're only saying that now... I bet you had tinsel on it and some matching coal on order...

Actually, one shade that never seems to get used on railway engines is powder blue.

Are pastels not used for pigment stability reasons, or just becuase they are a bit festive for serious railways.

How about a dayglo orange King? 6007 seeming apt...

    You want a pink loco........ mini_84-4-9 3 2302 Nairobi Mus copy.jpg

Well it's sun bleached maroon looked pink when I took this in the Nairobi Railway Museum in 1984. Thanks to an ageing Agfa colour slide it now looks more purple than pink.

Pink is not historically correct but if it is for the charity the I don’t mind that and that is what I will tell my friend. He isn’t a member on that line anyway it would be if they did a pannier tank at south Devon they’d lose his member. Plum valley never has done anything so it’s pleasing they are doing an engine

A Pink Pannier would look rather fab.

Actually, I think your friend was mistaken, the plan is actually to paint Kilmersdon pink when it comes back.
