This video has surfaced allegedly showing CP's preserved 4-6-4 No 2816 in steam yesterday....

It's been out of service for several years since "Management" lost interest, so if true it's a good sign - plus they kept the restoration rather quiet!

The Hunter Harrison period of CP management ensured nothing was done towards the restoration of 2816.
I'll ask questions of contacts in Canada.

    Cheers, Neil

I was lucky enough to get a ride behind it out of Toronto to Milton back in 2004, but you couldn't hear much as the stock was Go Transit Bombardier double deckers!
The CP Management has changed sufficiently now to ensure they recognise their heritage again - hence all the retro-liveried diesels that have appeared in the past year, plus the "armed forces" ones.

I'll rewrite the post as Johann Marsbar posted a detailed link.

For those who don't know what the "Holiday Train" is about, a very quick explanation.
Every year for the last 20 years CP has run two "Holiday Trains" which distributes goods to basics banks and other charities across the CP network, including into the USA. It is a massive charity operation by a private corporation, but many other North American railways do something similar. The trains are festooned with bright lights, a predecessor of the "Trains of Lights" in the UK.
Youtube link to the 2019 Holiday Train:

The video will be released on youtube on 12th December .

Looking ahead, the Royal Canadian Pacific charter train will probably return to service after covid-19 is finished. That would be worked by CP heritage fleet FP9's.

    Thanks to AC in Vancouver.

    Cheers, Neil

The Trains.com link said that 2816 wasn't going mainline. At least it has been steamed and checked over, which would never have happened in the Hunter Harrison period.

It is indeed good news about 2816, as is the change of attitude by CP (and CN) management towards heritage matters. And if anyone is feeling VERY RICH, the West Coast Railway Association at Squamish, would really appreciate donations towards the boiler work required on 2860 Royal Hudson. ( Then they need some sort of regular contract for operation in the Lower Mainland! Unfortunately the province of BC isn't railway minded.)

    Cheers, Neil
