Most things are possible. It's not unknown for our locos to temporarily swap identities, generally either in connection with a photo charter or a gala.

Setting aside my own connection to 931, I’d quite like to see my mother’s school acknowledged with a 940 Roedean image. Not just family history, but a nod towards inclusion while retaining the public school aspect of the class’s names.

LBSC's 3.5" gauge Schools loco was named Roedean. There are quite a few of them about. Not quite the same as 12" to the foot, but it's something!

I can remember 937's nameplate above an outside doorway (never locked). I wonder if it's still there? (!)
As I remember the place without a shred of affection I would pay to NOT have a temporary renumber to 937. :Arghh:

My Father's 3.5" gauge Schools is called Dover because that is where he was born. There also quite a few 5" gauge locos.

I think the extent of the Schools class build programme would have got into Black 5 territory before my school was even a consideration :(

I went to 939 where they named the loco Leatherhead instead of the school, St Johns School.

When I was in charge of the school model railway club (an outdoor Gauge 1 setup), I would borrow the nameplate from the Bursar's safe for display on Parents's Day and for when the Gauge 1 Association visited the school for a running day.

I always liked to pretend that 915 was named after my own school, but of course it was Brighton College, rather than Grammar.:(

My late father went to Whitgift, and while at the school was taken see 916 at East Croydon Station.

Impressive to see that the DCMS grant includes looking at sites for solar panels & the installation of electric car charging points

I was at (30)903 and I can recall looking at one of the nameplates from Charterhouse on the wall of my maths teacher's classroom. He was a keen enthusiast, ran the school 's railway society and was a volunteer guard on the Ffestinog Railway during the school holidays.

I understand that some parts of 903 have turned up on Stowe, but I must admit, I'm not keen on fake identities and would prefer to see it running with the correct number. 903 comes very near the top of engines which I wish had escaped the scrapman for obvious reasons, but I do at least have an oo gauge model of 903 as a consolation, even though I don't have a model railway to run it on!

Interesting. This begs the question of how vulnerable are the other sections of track which have been relaid using the geotex base?

Was the original depth of ballast insufficient?

Depth of Tamper tines, were they set right?

Does it also beg the question as to if the depth of the ballast is too shallow so it can be damaged during tamping operations (which is a different way of looking at the same thing) ?

Oops I posted this before I'd read the post by Ploughman!

Beyond my pay grade - except to say that clay pumping was a real issue in quite a number of places before but has been largely eliminated in those places where the track has been relaid. Maybe someone just made a one-off calibration error in setting up the tamper one time and it bit at this one location?

Remember it. HK 2&3 roads used to look like a dried-out mudflat. V depressing. Now its just the station buildings that look awful.

And what pray tell is wrong with the buildings? Of all stations on heritage railways, Horsted Keynes is one of my top favourites in terms of its looks and layout.

Definitely one I wish to visit someday for myself.

It’s more the condition, which is requiring some tlc. Had it not been for Covid this year, the 60th anniversary appeal would have been focused on station renovation at HK. Maybe next year ...
