I don't think we should be making the railway's police who can and who can't be there - it is an individual choice

It's getting a bit hard to keep up with the SVR website! Latest version at midday:

"The Railway is in an area that has been designated as Tier 2 in the new post-national lockdown restrictions. This means that we’re able to open December 3rd and Christmas events will go ahead as planned.

If you have bought event tickets, or are interested in buying event tickets, but you live in a Tier 3 area we strongly recommend that you read the Government guidelines before you travel out of your Tier 3 area."

The problem being that although the entirety of the SVR is in Tier 2, it has Tier 3 areas less than ten miles from it that would be considered 'local' to those that live there.

It all seems somewhat unclear: as far as I am aware, in Kent the KESR have cancelled all their Christmas events, but I've just seen on Facebook that the RHDR are continuing with theirs! (With some adaptations). Kent is tier 3.

Local is defined as your county though, isn't it? I know that will give lots of oddities, but it is freely available and understood?

I agree that the information is freely available, but as to whether it is fully understood is another matter. From personal observations, a large number of people in the Tier 3 West Midlands conurbation are certainly not staying within their local area.

It is frequently poorly understood, and of equally frequently limited relevance. Here in Grantham, the schools draw pupils from both Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire, and many would regard Nottingham as more relevant in day to day life than Lincoln.

Trouble is there are a lot of customers that are struggling to make sense of it all. I was reading the comments on the Bluebell's F/B post about going ahead with the Christmas services and most of the comments were asking the railway what was allowed and then getting irate when they didn't respond. The railway, and this goes for all not just Bluebell, can only point them towards the Government guidance online, else be liable for providing incorrect information that could result in a fine or worse.

Then there is the matter of demanding refunds because the situation has changed e.g. Rule of Six now applies and when the booking was made it didn't, people having to drop out makes a compartment booking unviable etc etc. It is testing the customer service teams of most railways to the limit I would imagine, especially when it comes to the T&Cs, which I suspect most don't bother reading when they book the tickets.

As I've said before this year, challenging times indeed...

    Regards,

    Dan

Tell me about it! Less than 8 miles from my house to Kidderminster, and only the first 200 yards is Tier 3. :(

It just makes it even more confusing, when one railway says its running, another says it's not, yet both are in the same county ? i'm assuming Tenterden and Hythe are both in Kent?

Try a different world never, i repeat, never go out on the moor alone after dark, strange things happen out there in that bleak forbidding landscape , strange beings come out of the marsh, to trap unsuspecting passers by with their home brew .next thing you know, youve married their daughters .

Spa Valley Railway going ahead. Tunbridge Wells West is in Kent but Eridge is in East Sussex & the Santa specials were planned to start from Eridge.

All of the RHDR is in Kent, even the radioactive bit, whilst some of the KESR is in errr...East Sussex, so that doesn't make much sense either.

Choice made by the railways concerned. Can be many reasons for not running not only the government rules or the interpretation thereof. What makes sense for one does not for all.

What we don't know is where the various work forces live and their individual attitudes to journeys through any tier three areas they may have to traverse. The railway I volunteer at is unusual in being in Tier 1 and involves travel through a Tier 2 area to reach. No problem for me but it might be different if Tier 3 were involved.

Indeed, I am sure the KESR have good reason not to run this Christmas. I have many relatives in Kent and East Sussex, several of whom consider themselves lucky to be within Tier 2 by a few miles, but are not happy at being able to visit the rest of the family across the border in Kent. Hope the Spa and RHDR have a good Christmas. Having spent many childhood holidays in Hythe and further along the Romney Marsh coast, I know it is pretty easy to isolate yourself at Dungeness!

Just to note, Charnwood BC don't have the ability to rule as to whether the GCR can operate under the new Coronavirus regulations.
