Sad to see, I last saw it banged up in the old Preston shed probably like several others on the forum.

The photograph was taken by Carlisle steam photographer Peter Brock, a fireman at both Kingmoor and Canal sheds - I knew Peter well, sadly he is no longer with us; he dated the photo as January 1965.

I saw 46257 in July 1964 at Kingmoor, one of 7 Coronations I saw there and at Upperby that day. Just two or three months later the axe fell on the entire class.

City of Salford was just a child. Hardly run in. Never an LMS loco, introduced by BR in May 1948, withdrawn 1964.

The photo is in Peter's book 'Border Steam' along with another one taken at Gretna in March 1965 of 8F 48104 taking 4 Duchesses, 46225, 46238, 46239 and 46255 to Kilmarnock for scrap.:(

It's red sibling produced the only occasion the cutters at that yard phoned their managers to confirm it really was for the chop. History tells us the outcome of said call :(

Locomotives and the dates they were withdrawn/hauled to the scrapyards can vary depending on the source of information. I think the dates and locos (?) listed in the book Border Steam may not be accurate. The remaining Carlisle allocated Coronations (8) had been assembled at Upperby after withdrawal and were scrapped at Troon Harbour, not Kilmarnock. 46226 had initially been sold to the Slag Reduction Co in Barrow and the movement to there was dated for 15 December 1964. Due to gauging issues, the sale and move were subsequently cancelled and the locomotive remained at Upperby eventually joining the rest at Troon, being hauled there by 73143 on 27 January 1965 (Derek Cross). I photographed 46226 at Upperby (below) during that same month, it was the only Coronation on the shed.
The Coronations scrapped at Troon were, 46225/26/37/38/44/50/55/57. J.L. Stevenson photographed 46225 being pushed past 46238 upon arrival at the scrapyard on 2 December 1964. A Steam For Scrap book I have indicates that the Coronations were hauled to Troon in three lots on dates 30 November, 1st and 2nd December 1964 (46226 obviously excepted) which ties in with the photographs that Stevenson took on the 2nd. Stevenson concludes that the arrivals on the 2nd December included 46225/37/50 and 46257 City of Salford. Where does 45640 fit into all of this, well, its scrapping date is listed as January 1965.

If this date is correct about 46257, then the date in the opening post, 1965, must be wrong. There were two Jubilees scrapped at Troon, 45613 and 45635 so maybe one of these might be the one in the picture and not 45640. Could there be three Corries behind 46257? If 45640 is correct then 46257 would probably have been dropped off at Kilmarnock.

As Neil says he was just using the information on the photograph.

Do you consider that a Black Five could haul four Coronations plus a 5X.

Plenty of bloody sad sights there... The absolutely indecent haste in which locomotives which were good for many more years were culled is nothing but criminal.

I think that will be the date the photograph was taken. The Coronations were withdrawn en masse on 12 September (except 46256 which had an agreement to work the Scottish Lowlander on the 26th). 46257 had featured at a Railway Queen event at Manchester on the 12th and had ran from there to Preston on the same date. It was eventually hauled to Upperby to join its classmates.
