A splendid picture indeed - but wow these cabs are 'busy' with all of the blobs and gadgets added.

They sure are at the edges. Even the E1 roof is too low for me to stand straight near the cab doorway, though it is much better inside

Terrier 2678, built in 1880 by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway and fresh from overhaul, is seen here at Tenterden Town Station on a test run to make sure everything works properly. The eagle eyed will spot that she now has her larger Isle of Wight style bunker fitted again. 86D4EED4-7121-44BB-9DD4-FA4F806E0DB2.jpeg

I have seen a press release from KESR the local council buying some of the Christmas stock which is no longer required, and donating it to food banks.

However I have only ever posted photos before, or linked to online articles. How do I post a PDF which is in my iBooks app?

50 years previously Colonel Stephens had at least had a body put on his railcars!

Still, it could be worse, next thing is they will be putting a bus body on the chassis and selling them to British Railways...............

Film of the original Colonel Stephens adapted Railmotor which seems to have been the first on an adopted car/lorry chassis in the country: and still, as Father Ted might have said ''And, for my money, the best!''

That was a bold decision to change away from diesel power after having paid for design work towards accommodating the generator. Future proofing.

I agree with the observation about 'future proofing' the use of diesel generation (since it's likely to be increasingly dissuaded, over time), but I am mostly un-moved by the simplistic 'green' obsession with batteries: all they do is move the base problem, of generating the power to begin with, somewhere else.

In addition to which batteries themselves have issues, both in sourcing the materials (often in other countries, 'out of sight', where environmental issues caused by their mining are not carefully controlled), and in disposal at end-of-life (a widely-overlooked problem with many supposedly 'green' technologies, such as composite fan blades, and disastrous heavy-metal environmental contamination from used solar cells). Yes, we'll get better at all those aspects with experience, but these technologies aren't the wonderful 'total cures' their backers (many of whom are making fortunes, here and now, off the public obsession with them) are selling them to the gullible as. Batteries in general do allow one to better deal with a major downside of many 'green' energy sources (wind, solar, tidal, etc), which is the temporal distance between generation and use, but they have significant overall issues (above), over and above the increased systemic complexity their use brings.

Given that this application is mobile, they may be the best alternative for it, though.

The new carriage shed at Rolvenden has a huge, south facing roof. One could put solar panels on that, to charge batteries. But perhaps not the right place for the kitchen car, which would be stabled at Tenterden I guess.

I have an available flat roof space, but two things stop me from buying solar panels:

    - What do you do with them when they are inevitably life expired?
    - the technology is constantly improving, and there is a new generation of more efficient solar panels on the horizon.

In general, we must devote far more thought to 'whole of life' issues than just those at the front end. For example, I looked into a skip this morning, and found it contained i.a. two complete plastic windows - now what? - two printers and a plastic Christmas tree. When I had a hard hat at Broadway I was told it was 'out of date'. So what do I do with it? 'Bin it' was the easy reply.

    Thanks

We have a solid team working to bring the project to completion and provide the train with a kitchen car fit for the next 40 years. Help with closing the funding gap would be gratefully received.

It is the first of 4 steps to make the Wealden Pullman sustainable for the long term. The next three are: roofing the train's berthing siding; completing the replacement of car 'Theodora's' missing marquetry; and bringing car 'Aries' into traffic. A priviledge to be involved with one of the jewels of rail heritage.

    I don't see a link to a video.
https://kesr.org.uk/donate/kitchen-car-appeal/ says "The crucial next stage is to purchase and fit the diesel generator ...".
Where is it stated that the plan has changed? In the video that I can't find?

With the recent demise of the Llangollen Railway PLC fresh in our minds, we don't really need to remind ourselves that heritage railways are in a precarious situation. The KESR is no exception and they have just issued an urgent appeal to raise money in order to survive. The message is alarming but I hope they succeed.

We need as much help as possible to keep the railway going and have calculated we need to raise £100,000 this Spring to ensure our living museum survives for future generations to enjoy.
