Would anybody out there know which Standard 4 tank was used on the Folkestone harbour branch to bank Taw Valley on its railtour quite a few years back? And would there be any photos of it about on the branch?

Surely a run from Lover's Walk depot, Brighton to Southall goes nowhere near Folkestone Harbour?

All 4 steam locos did a quite a Mainline jaunt of the Southern during Autumn 1991. Including the move in the video.

I saw the 34027 & 80080 Folkestone Hbr job, from the Burstin Hotel next door.

Many Thanks for the replies gentlemen. Im sure that was a fine sight as well as an interesting railtour. A shame really that something like that couldnt be repeated for the last runs, but I suppose we are lucky to have anything on the network nowadays - Even if we do get stuck with those pesky Bulleids down here more often than not!

how good it would be to see a standard tank on the harbour branch again, especially if its pushing tangmere up the line [-o<
if your getting bored with tangmere, well in april i believe that we have a brit visiting
i saw tangmere when she came down recently a couple of weeks ago, , well i should say i heard her go past, i was not quick enough to look out of my window, i overlook the viaduct just outside central station,, but i did see the 47 hauling her back to ashford when did we last see a 47 down here in kent?

That video brings back happy memories of when steam was rare on the third rail and there ware a lot of unusual movements, like 34027 doing Ashford-London Bridge, then 75069 doing the same half an hour later and arriving alongside TV at london bridge and then 777 shortly afterwards with the support coaches, although only to Hither Green, and the triple header with 75069,777.34027 and support coaches ( tickets were sold for this) that ran Hither Green-Eastleigh at the begining of the rush hour! 70000 that ran Vic-folkestone East, in conjuction with 80080,80079 that were blasting up and down the branch,( way more impressive than Tangmere ) and then ran empty stock to Dover Prirory for servicing and ran into Dover Marine for turning.

I have a lot more shots which I will upload in time, but the sound of the tanks coming up the branch with 70000's train ( 10 on) in the dark in the rain was quite something!

I have found a few more photographs of the 80079/80080 visit to Folkestone in 1994. It looks like the earlier part of the day was rather dull (or at least that's my excuse for the quality of the pictures).

Great pictures, Thank you for posting them.

Just going back to my earlier comments regarding the Bulleids, of course there is nothing wrong with them - they are fine machines. It just seems a shame to me that things have changed a bit since events like these. If you think that when 34027 is outshopped there may well be 4 or so main line Bulleids, yet its hard to see some of the non express locos such as the 4mt tanks, 30053, 31625, 75069 etc etc getting back out on the network.

P.S 70013 may well be something different if you are bored of Tangmere, but as in many ways its pretty much a Bulleid boiler on a set of Bulleid frames you could argue its just Tangmere with all the interesting bits taken off \:D/

Very interesting those vids, Chris, especially given that they show trains using the former up line, whereas I believe nowadays all trains use the former down line
