Sure the trust have great relationship with Cleveland Bridge.

Creating a new turntable as an apprentice project would not be hard to justify.

    personal thought....

Key is not whether they exist, its whether they are not in use and therefore 'available'. One or too owners of these turntables may well be feeling the 'Covid' related pinch and wondering how they might raise a few bob....

Isn’t that just because the scope of that list is Great Britain only, not global? The same as the other registers, eg carriages, wagons, loco tenders.

If you were to "go global" there seemed to be an awful lot of redundant ones seen on a couple of trips I did to Argentina back in 2007/2009. The majority of those will be from British manufacturers as well, though post 1948 they appeared to have a phase of removing the makers plates, where possible, from the infrastructure!
Wouldn't like to think of the bureaucracy alone involved in trying to repatriate anything from there though......

The survey talks about UK not just GB and all the surveys include stock (RPSI and others) which is based in the RoI
I think to expand the surveys beyond these two islands (3 actually, because the IoM is on there too) may cause a few problems!!

Just goes to show, you can take off all the labels, but it doesn't change the past, nor prevent the system becoming a massive drain on the taxpayer in the future! Poor old Juan Peron.

It's wandering rather off the P2 topic, but it rather frustrated my attempts to identify any former Ransomes & Rapier products out there. Did manage a water crane, Water tank and some hydraulic buffers though! (all of which had plates/id on them)

It would be interesting to know what their analysis of the need to use the screwed plugs was in the crank shaft assembly (as per previous practice) as presumably their analysis of the adequacy of the fit does not depend on these to stop the webs shifting..

I wouldn't imagine so. Given the wheels are pressed on to the axle, then the keys pressed in, surely the plugs are belt and braces??

Id imagine these are just screwed and loctite'd in to place...?

Just wondering where the "Monkbridge" was in the 1939 annotation? - There being foundries in the Monkbridge Road area of Leeds, and Vickers also having works in Leeds. Or was it a foundry in Sheffield?

    Richard.

I am not sure that the crank assembly has keys but perhaps you are referring to the wheels? I suspect you are right in that it is a sort of a mixture of belt and braces and that is what the LNER/BR did. As you may know, in Shawcross's paper to the ILoco E in 1926 on built-up crank axles, one contributor suggested that plugs were not needed, but in those days without the benefit of the analytical tools available today, it would probably have been a brave engineer who did not use them. It is interesting however that even with today's sophisticated techniques, that it was determined that there was still a need for the plugs.

Doncaster Monk bridge foundry was originally a subsidiary of Kitsons

Ah, I thought that Leeds might not be correct, but did wonder if it was linked with Kirkstall Forge. obviously not, and Thank You for the information!

I think there is a bit of confusion creeping in here. Monk Bridge has nothing to do with Doncaster. Monk Bridge ironworks in Leeds was sold to James Kitson in 1854. When Kitsons closed Monk Bridge continued as a business coming under government control during WWII. It was eventually sold to Daniel Doncaster & Sons, a Sheffield firm. Monk Bridge then became known as Doncasters Monk Bridge Ltd. The works eventually closed in 2005.

See http://www.leedsengine.info/leeds/histjw.asp and https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Daniel_Doncaster_and_Sons if you want further information.

Thread Drift Alert Sentinel owner and co- re founder of the Sentinel Drivers Club, the late Dan Doncaster of Colchester was a relative of the Daniel Doncaster mentioned above, whether there is any connection with Doncaster Engineering, Who now have The Sentinel Waggon Works in Shrewsbury I do not know.
