I heard the same Steve, from what I consider a reliable source, a few days after the event. However a few weeks later it 'came out' that it had 'only' been 82mph... But with the way the big railway grapevine was working overtime, I still can't decipher what was truth and what was just bluff. Intriguing anyway!

Needless to say, those who needed to know about the precise events will have been informed long ago by now - one bloke on the telly isn't going to change much. But still, in my book, if you brag about something that shouldn't have happened, on national television, you're a bit of a plonker really.

Guy, I think you mean borrow. But yes, Stephen's pics are awesome. He obviously did some good location research.

Big congrats to the A1 team for creating a superb locomotive and a well run inaugural tour. It was good to see a reasonably well matched rake of stock hanging on the tender too!

    From Oxford Dictionary

    1. to grant the use of (something) on condition that it or its equivalent will be returned.
    2. to give (money) on condition that it is returned and that interest is paid for its temporary use.
    3. to give or contribute obligingly or helpfully: to lend one's aid to a cause.
    4. to adapt (oneself or itself) to something: The building should lend itself to inexpensive remodeling.
    5. to furnish or impart: Distance lends enchantment to the view.

As the customer of mine is a professional photographer, i as a IT engineer am going to offer 2 hours services for the "lend" of the equipment.

Went to the location yesterday PM, and took some pictures with a Canon Digital camera, results are OK, however to do the location justice, need a really good camera.

The location will become an instant classic, i can assure you!!!!

Yes, I know what "to lend" means. I didn't mean to make a mountain out of a molehill, I just mentioned that you, as the recipient, are "borrowing" said equipment. The other chap is doing the lending. Sorry, I know that drawing attention to spelling and grammar is frowned upon in NatPres so I'll say no more!

I look forward to seeing the results of your photographic exploits.

    John.

That bloke on the telly was a bit of a knob - I think his calculations would be wrong (or he has a sat nav from a christmas cracker).

Rules is rules, and the opperators of something so prestigeous would not risk anything - especially with so many eyes on it. Who do you believe - one bloke talking through his hat, or everyone else? :-k

Did he say that the alleged speed had been achieved on Saturday's train? I think not!

All he said was that "it's done 90 already" so make of that what you will. I know what he was referring to and it wasn't Saturday's train.

This is getting tedious. We've been here before. Clearly he was talking about the wheel sets being balanced ;-) So let's give it a rest and wait for an official announcement from the A1 team as and when eh?

FTOD. The maximum speed on Saturday was a brief 77mph at Durham. Most of the time speed was circa 73mph. The average York - Newcastle was 63.9mph, very creditable with a 500t load.

Very creditable indeed. A mile a minute start to stop average was always considered a good average
    in BR steam days.

It seems that there are those who say that the loco has done 90+ and those that say it can't possibly have done so because it's against the rules. A bit like driving a car at 90+; nobody does that, do they? And if they did, they wouldn't put out an official press release.

Neither did he make it clear. (OK, Knob might be a bit strong - retracted) but it was not made clear, espcially in light of the remark about British Rail regulations. He stated that it was over 90 - which is untrue. Get onto a different subject.

Why are we even discussing this ?, the Locomotives OTMR readout will confirm this bloke is talking out his backside, Network Rail are not going to believe Internet rumours or dippy Journalists over their telltale black box.

Maybe, but the answer will be black and white so i don't see the point in dicussing did it or didn't it, OTMR removes the doubt, personally i hope no one involved in such a prestigious project would be daft enough to do anything silly.

The answer is in black and white. Are you sure that it will confirm that the bloke was talking out of his backside or are you guessing? The ongoing discussion seems to be because some people are in denial of the facts.
