....to say nothing of his hand in the Class 43 HST design. It would seem that he had quite an illustrious career.

Have to admit I did not know about it myself until I had a look at his write up in Wikipedia yesterday. Every day a school day on Nat Pres.

Canadian pacific was blue and this looked ok to me. I wonder if someone will ever do a flat one in blue for a while. I think this would stand up amongst the crowd even if it doesn’t last for very long. No I am not going to pay for it before the usual people have a go at me I am just having a discussion here thanks.

The document shown at post #4714 refers to "designs prepared at Brighton under the direction of Mr H.H. Swift ... in consultation with Mr. R.C. Bond". It doesn't mention Jarvis. So who did what?

I'd need to reference my copy of his biography but I know jarvis was in charge of the design team at Brighton.

Ron Jarvis was the Chief Technical Assistant at Brighton Works. H.H. Swift was the person who followed after Bulleid and he was responsible, with others, for producing some of the designs but under the direction/steer of Jarvis who, as @paullad1984 says, was in charge of the design team.

So Jarvis was similar to any other big name team leader. The thinker and motivator but not necessarily the person who got his hands dirty, so to speak.

Surely the other way round? Bond was the top man, Riddles' successor as BR CME albeit the job description was probably different. Swift was CME&EE for the Southern region so surely outranked Jarvis rather than being under his direction?

Sorry I thought we were talking about who was behind the rebuilding of the Bulleid Pacifics not who was CME of the Southern after Bulleid left soon after nationalisation. Jarvis replaced Bulleid on the Southern and as for the wider structure of the railways, that was different as Riddles became CME of the whole of BR until 1953, followed by Bond, then Harrison.

None of these people had anything significant to do with the rebuilding of the Bulleid Pacifics, to my knowledge. Swift outranked Jarvis? Not in terms of designing the rebuilt locos, he didn't.

A quick internet search reveals that only two of the preserved MNs are now in an unrestored, unworked on state;- 35010 Blue Star at the CVR and 35022 Holland America Line at Crewe. Considering that, for many years people have been saying that too many had been "saved" and most would never steam, it is an impressive achievement.

That's only two where restoration hasn't started at all, but how many in running order and how many where restoration (in one case to original condition) has started but has a long way to go?

I raised the question because the document shown at post #4714 mentioned Swift and Bond as responsible for the redesign.

35005, 35027 and 35028 are the only three to steam in preservation aren’t they?

Doh! Of course. I’ve got photos of it on a tour. I put it down to old age.
