35050 "Yeoward Line" - now I know it was planned, I'll look at getting an MN now as my late father worked for Yeoward Brothers.

I like 35041. Sailed Liverpool to Karachi on RMS 'Circassia' in 1959.

Query: were the names originally selected as being lines that used Southampton?

Yeoward Brothers were Liverpool based... they let the shipping side run down and went into air freight, finally ceasing trading about 2010.

Definitely Southampton based, but competing for the traffic to the Isle of Wight....
The Southampton, Isle of Wight and South of England Royal Mail Steam Packet Company Limited (Now known as "Red Funnel".)
Just a bit large for a MN nameplate perhaps?

    Cheers, Neil

I’m still curious as to what if Fowler had built a small class of Pacifics for the LMS not long after taking over as CME. A parallel-boilered Pacific would look quite handsome in a way. Perhaps the “Emperor” Class?

When the LMS was first formed and Fowler became CME they had a no named loco policy.

Forgot. But Fowler did change that and what if he did create a taper-boilered Pacific?

35031 - does a fortnight of hard work twice a year and then doesn't come out of the shed if it's windy for the rest of the year...

I always thought the GWR painted itself into a corner with Kings. Imagine explaining to Buck House that King xyz was being put on secondary duties...

If I owned a GWR Modified Hall, I think I'd have replica 'plates (or originals, if you like!) for 7930 "Fookham Hall"

I wonder if steam hadn't finished in the 1960s and Swindon had continued building Churchward knock-off 4-6-0s, perhaps the spirit of more egalitarian times would have replaced the stately Castles, Halls and Manors with the Bungalows, Semis and Maisonettes classes. "Oh look Jimmy", says a twelve year old on the platform end of Banbury Station, "here comes 7504, 'Dunroamin'".

Things then reached a nadir with the 85xx "Terrace" class, which in typical Swindon fashion got named:

    8500 - "No. 1 Severnside Terrace"
    8501 - "No. 2 Severnside Terrace"
    8502 - "No. 3 Severnside Terrace"
    etc.

causing problems for dimwitted train spotters and Ian Allan typesetters alike for years after.

In the late 1960s plans were well advanced for a "Cottage" class for secondary passenger work until the increasing popularity of the wireless programme "Round the Horne" caused an urgent missive from Marylebone to the Western Region CME's office to think of another name pronto.

Well now here's quite a name for an extra LMS Jubilee and what's more it's a genuine one at that, HMS By Jove. And here's the proof.-
