Brilliant! I do like the dig at Adml. Beattie's incompetent signals section.

I always thought the GW should have carried on working down the property theme, a pub class of prairie tank and a cottage class of pannier tank.

I'm in the Local Model Engineering Society, The West Wilts & District Model Engineering Club.

Their bank is a bit of a stickler for the correct payee on the cheques, good job they didnt have the Red Funnel account in the days when cheques were in common use

I had to provide a form to the bank our model engineering used to authorise them to accept alternative versions of account name. What irked me was that they had accepted the initials of the society for years without question. One week I paid in cheques with the initials without question. The next week similar cheques were rejected. No warning of the change of policy was given. I was just told that they should never have been accepted with the initials only. It caused me a lot of trouble.

I’ve had similar. The reason given was that now cheques are so rare they look at them and if the payees name doesn’t match they won’t accept it. It’s not a change of policy; it has always been the case. The change is that they only used to check those of £5000 or more.

If we can offer Liverpool based lines then surely BLUE FUNNEL can be included.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Funnel_Line

I worked for Ocean Group from 1986 until it merged with NFC in 1999 to form Exel plc, left in 2006 when the company was sold out to Deutsche Post and became part of Day and Half Late.

Also a shame the GER never had a naming policy, first two candidates surely should have been S69's as CAPTAIN CHARLES FRYATT and NURSE EDITH CAVELL.

With these imaginary names, there could be problems with tactful diagramming.
35055 Grey Funnel Line would be OK working to Portsmouth or via Chatham, but wouldn't be too welcome in Southampton...

    Cheers, Neil

I have heard a couple of times that Merchant Navies would not be allocated to special boat trains from Southampton to avoid one named with the wrong line being used with the arrival of a ship from a different company.

I am somewhat sceptical of this but wonder if there was any element of truth in it. If so it must have been unpopular with shedmasters!

There is the story that a Special Pullman from Southampton Docks to Waterloo for a new Spanish Ambassador. H.E. was a bit of an enthusiast and went to thank the driver fir a good run. He then saw the name: 'Sir Francis Drake'! As far as the Running Foreman at Eastleigh Loco. was concerned it was just 851. I would guess that henceforth a bit more attention was paid to the bit of brass on the side.

I think the same problem occurred at Holyhead when Royal Ulster Rifleman was rostered to work a special train of Irish immigrants.

Apparently Stratford never maintained 1648 'Arsenal' as well as they did 1672 'West Ham United'

Spitfire and Hurricane were already taken by Bulleid’s Pacific’s and you’ve also had Blenheim twice 79005 and 79014 (also taken by a GW castle, so that’d be 3 with the same name) ;)
