The Paris vehicle that contains the generator had to be mutilated to install it, so I very much hope that doesn't happen with the 483, even if a generator that is light enough, powerful enough and fits the loading gauge could be found.

Short term, could the unit be hauled by one of the IOWSR loco's , dead with air for braking and to operate the doors being provided by the loco? does tube stock run on single air pipe, or duplex? eventually a small engineers type vehicle could provide the power, how much power would be needed to power an 483 anyway?

Yes. Hopefully 006 has a brighter future there.

Is there any news on where the remaining 483s are heading? Are they destined to become razor blades?

I believe one is destined to be scrapped its probally nothing more than a shell anyway, there is one other unit, though that its future is uncertain, two, if you count the unit that was earmarked for Brading, that now isnt going there.

Probably 002 to be scrapped, as it was withdrawn years ago and heavily stripped for spares.

006 and 007 to EOR and IOWSR respectively.

008 I believe was earmarked for Brading. Hopefully someone else might offer a home for it instead?

004 has also been a spares donor, although withdraw more recently and not so heavily stripped as 002. Possibly a scrapper too though?

009 still in working order of sorts, and used as depot shunter. I wonder if this will escape the scrapman.

001, 003 and 005 (and 010 if you count that) scrapped in early 2000s.

Do they have an EP brake or pure Westinghouse?

We need to remember that these are tube loading gauge units, so have very limited under-frame space. Most seats have something underneath them already!! I'm not sure where you would fit them tbh

I believe I once heard there were plans in place to extend Train Story? Clearly that won’t happen for a while now, with getting through Covid being the main priority.

Probably another 30 years to go before space needs to found be for a 484 as well though!

Wikipedia says 670hp per two coach unit. Now, I guess that gives you rather higher top speed than you'd want on a heritage railway, but on the other hand there will be inefficiencies using an engine to power a generator. 670hp is more or less the equivalent of two 08 shunters, or similar to a class 73 on diesel power ...

In other words - a fag packet calculation suggests that if you created a separate generator vehicle, particularly if you tried to do it with available components, it would be at least same order of magnitude as a decent diesel shunter in size.

Would there be any scope in converting one of the other vehicles into a separate generator/battery power unit?

There is a reference in the strategic plan (https://iwsteamrailway.co.uk/about-us/strategic-vision/) to needing more space, and I believe that the current building has been such a success there is a recognition that we'll need another. A certain amount of stuff is stored off-site actually to keep things clear.

Strange, i was just thinking that my self ,take a car from one of the stripped units, remove the seating, or most of it retain the driving compartment and have the generator/ batteries in the passenger part, and run it as a three car unit with the generator car leading or pushing

Unless anyone wants to use it all day, I would have thought a battery pack would be favourite. Plenty of time to recharge the batteries (which can be distributed around the train, not a lump in one place like a genny). Battery technology seems to be taking off now, so who knows what will be possible?

The one on the right was built about 6 miles down the road from where I grew up thank you very much, so I’m allowed to be a bit biased :) although stick an air pump and some sort of multi working gear on the one on the left and we could be in business :p

I can't help but get the impression from this photograph that the man stood by the shiny new diesel is somewhat showing off or gloating about it, and the driver of the old dirty C Class is looking over rather enviously... either that or very non child friendly words for the guy stood by that damn diesel! :Shifty:

(Or is that an O1 Class, I have a bad habit of mixing those two up!)

No idea, but the nice clean one’s a BRCW Type 3, later to become Class 33 and they’ve worked everywhere over the Southern (Even to Smallbrook Junction!)
