Isle of Wight Steam Railway

The plan isn’t to let 007 sit and rot. From what I’ve heard, the plan is to display it in Train Story initially and maintain it in working order. Then in future investigate the possibility of adding batteries / a generator to run it on the IOWSR.

007 probably has a more secure future than 006 at EOR, which will be kept outside and subject to the ravages of weather / vandals etc.

 

Exactly. According to the IWSR's December newsletter it will form a new exhibit inside Train Story, secure and undercover.

I think that @Paulthehitch will agree, that's almost certainly a WIBN too far on the IOW STEAM Railway.
At least the group at the EOR have active plans to restore and run their unit. it seems daft to make them start from a worse position than somewhere where their gift will be stuffed and mounted (which could just as easily be done with a tarted up non runner) :/

LTTG’s website says they’re working with Clayton on a battery solution for their unit; and in various forum posts members have suggested this may take up some seating space in one of the cars. Clayton have long experience in battery powered mining & tunnelling locos so I wonder if their technology might have more in common with the lower speeds and mileages needed on a heritage railway compared with the main line performance requirements for the Vivarail battery units.

It’s also encouraging to hear the IWSR also have long-term aspirations to battery-power their unit too and are cooperating with LTTG in dividing up the remaining spares recovered from Island Line.

I wonder if LT Museum might some day also be interested in a similar battery pack for their Q-Stock and maybe Standard Stock projects. With the proliferation of modern signalling systems the potential for heritage operations on the UndergrounD slowly diminishes and the possibility of operating the Q-Stock on heritage lines has been considered by the museum, to the extent of retaining the last A-Stock trailer for possible rebuilding as a generator or battery carrier. I don’t know how far this idea has progressed since the Q project is not fully funded and therefore proceeds very slowly.

 

The idea of a class 483 coming to the IOWSR was once dismissed by some as WIBN. A 483 is now confirmed as coming to the IOWSR.

The thought of running 007 under it’s own power at IOWSR has now been dismissed as WIBN. This is despite it being a publicly stated intention of the IOWSR, who have a unit in excellent condition, secure undercover accommodation, and an excellent track record in rolling stock restoration, maintenance and fund raising

Yet a totally new group set up to move a unit to Essex who will store, restore and convert to battery in the open air is not being described as WIBN?

I believe it is a combination of Rolling On The Floor Laughing with an incontinence issue.

 

Rolling on the floor p*ssing something something laughter at a guess. In essence a glorified LOL, which I've always thought is a bit daft. LMAO if you really must, but ROFL, and worse its derivatives, well, really? Other than ROFLcopters which is an excellent blend of letters, but even then it can only be used ironically.

Absolutely not but nowhere has the ability to do everything it wishes to. Every generation of preservationists appears to need to re-learn this.

Doesn't mean they can't aspire to achieve their aims and investigate possible ways of achieving them. I've pointed out before, it's all too easy for people like your self to suggest that it would be impossible, with no hard evidence but a loud and persistent voice to back them up. Let those who want to take the project forward get on with it rather than try to sabotage it! If it doesn't work out then there's still a static exhibit left.

Paul, I agree! But we need to remember that the Isle of Wight Steam Railway is where it is now thanks to 55 years of grabbing/making opportunities and keeping doors open for future possibilities. This is a general policy that I have contributed to and actively supported for decades. Not everything that has been aspired to has been, or will be, achieved but we have come a long way since 1966.

 

It is probably obvious to those ITK [in the know] but what does WIBN mean - an internet search said "Women In Business Network" but I am sure that is not it. I know what a TLA is - but am not sure what the expression is for a 'Four Letter Abbreviation'.

I understand it's XTLA - eXtended TLA.

 

It stands for "Wouldn't It Be Nice" in other words wishful thought paid for by other people
