Thanks for the kind comments everyone regarding yesterdays footage. And nahh it wasn't Austin, wasn't far off being like that though...

I was up at Ais Gill too for a close-in shot and having looked again at the footage, believe it was driven Southbound by Gordon Hodgson (certainly looks like him leaning out). I'm not surprised if it was - his performances have become known as being something a bit special. A cheeky go at the Blue Riband perhaps? I know it won't have beaten 46229's record, but 46115 had a Blue Riband eligible load (12) and from all the vids I've seen on the climb, was consistently storming along. Certainly an excellent time will have been achieved - something we've not seen on Ais Gill for some time.

I quite agree about Ais Gill Austin - what a haunting roar she made up Mallerstang!! We first heard her and thought 'what's that? Can't be it, 15 minutes early. A jet perhaps?'. Absolutely magical stuff. Excellent video - what clag coming round the curve towards the top!

From experience I think that all WCRC drivers make every effort to please both passengers and linesiders, but perhaps some just put in that little extra...

For those that want to know, the northbound run was in the hands of birthday boy, Bill Andrew, with Mrs Santrian's little lad, Frank, firing; Gordon Hodgson was, indeed, in control, for the southbound, with John Fletcher on the shovel. I don't think the southbound ascent of Ais Gill was quite Blue Riband material but pretty good all the same.

A very good day was had by all.

That was my first thought too David, that it was perhaps a jet. That was the first time I have been able to see her since she returned and one that won't be forgotten. Glad you liked the video and look forward to seeing yours soon.

Yes an excellent day James and thanks for that information, just a pity about the reduced mileage.
I realise that the return via the S&C was due to engineering work on the WCML, but why the loss of Victoria as the start for 46115?
So next question, when are we going to get the round trip, Shap one way and S&C the other.??

Agreed what a brilliant day out this was. The "roar" as SG stormed along Mallerstang will live in my memory for a long time. For those interested SG reached Ais Gill summit board in 24 mins 37 secs from a standing start at Appleby [timed from 6 coaches back] with a minimum speed of 40 mph between Ais Gill viaduct to just south of the road bridge.
A 12 vehicle rake of all maroon stock, steam heated [no diesel on the back] was also greatly appreciated. To ALL involved in this operation my most sincere thanks.

To all involved sincere thanks and in particular for using steam heat, a 1 and not having diesel on the back.

You mean you got him away from a week's mourning on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Buddy Holly's death? (Those who know Fletch will understand!)

Maybe this performance on the shovel was for Buddy!
